Dans les deux cas, on va comparer quelque chose ou quelqu’un à l’aide d’un adjectif.

La construction est différente si l’adjectif est court (1 syllabe) ou long (2 syllabes ou plus).

Sont considérés comme courts :

- les adjectifs d’une seule syllabe et les adjectifs de 2 syllabes qui se terminent en -y. (happy > happier / happiest)

 

1. Comparatif : ‘plus que’ et ‘moins que’.

 

‘Plus que’

Adjectif court : ADJ. + -er + than Ex. : Superman is stronger than Batman.

Adjectif long : more + ADJ. + than Ex. : Spiderman is more intelligent than the police.

 

‘Moins que’

Quel que soit l’adjectif : less + ADJ. + than Ex. : The Hulk is less fast than the Flash.

 

2. Superlatif : ‘le plus’ et ‘le moins’.

 

‘Le plus’

Adjectif court : the + ADJ. + -est Ex. : Superman is the funniest in the universe.

Adjectif long : the most + ADJ. Ex. : Batman is the most wonderful.

 

‘Le moins’

Quel que soit l’adjectif : the least + ADJ. Ex. : Antman is the least tall of all superheroes.

 

Particularités :

good > better > the best

bad > worse > the worst

far > farther / further > the farthest / the furthest
