Sit-in campaigns & freedom rides

14novembre

Sit-in campaigns and freedom rides were two form of protest against segregative laws taken up by civilians - white and African-American activists - consisting in deliberately challenging and violating the segregation rules in the South of the United States.
Sit-in campaigners and freedom riders proved their fortitude and true desire to make a change, aiming to draw the attention of the press so that more and more people join these peaceful protests.

Find attached the document summing up what sit-ins and freedom rides are.

The Civil Rights Movement - President Lyndon Baines Johnson

14novembre

Dear students of Terminales L and Terminales STMG,

Please find attached the article dealing with President Lyndon Baines Johnson (in office from 1963 until 1968), who was considered a civil rights reformer for two big federal laws  - the 1964 Civil RIghts Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act - which paved the way for putting an end to segregation and any form of racial discrimination.

The GIF below shows President LBJ signing the CRA, which turned out to be the most sweeping legislation against segregation.
