The Nightmare Before Christmas-Tim Burton (Daphné de Froissard)

dans la catégorie The Gothic

The movie was directed by Henry Selick and written by Caroline Thompson. This film is based on Tim Burton original story. Burton wrote and produced The Nightmare Before Christmas in 1993 for Disney and he collaboratted with Henry Selick to realize it. In most of his animation realization, Tim Burton used the technique of the stop motion. Tim Burton (born in 1958) is an American film director, producer, artist, writer, and animator. He is famous for his dark and macabre, gothic, horror and fantasy films.

  • The plot

This movie tells the story of Jack Skellington named the pumpkin king and who is an scarecrow bone alive. He comes from Halloween Town. He spend all days to prepare the next halloween party. One day he decide to leave the town and he discovers a portal to Christmas Town and decides to celebrate christmas in is town, with some dastardly and comical consequences.

  • What makes this story gohtic ?

This movie is gothic because there is an dread, dark and horror atmosphere. The settings are inspired by halloween, the sceneries are all distorted and dark. The characters are all different and they are also unrealistic and frightful, they are typical gothic. For example, Jack is a skeleton, he wants to do evil because it is normal in their world. His dog Zero is a ghost and he lives anyway this is very unusual.

The soundtrack helps us get into the atmosphere of the movie:

There is an evolution from the begining to the end, the characters become nice and there is a christmas atmosphere but the characters are still looks scary.

  • The imaginary

This imaginary notion is very important in this movie because the story takes place in an imaginary world with weirds settings. The characters are all unrealistic, most of them are half dead, half alive. The plot is also imaginary and uncommon. It mixes Halloween theme and christmas theme which are very different from each other. The gothic is essentially based on the imaginary notion.

Gothic Story Presentation ~ Carmilla (Mélany CHARVET)

dans la catégorie The Gothic

A few words about the author:

Joseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu (28 August 1814– 7 February 1873) was an Irish writer of Gothic tales and mystery novels. He was the leading ghost-story writer of the nineteenth century and was central to the development of the genre in the Victorian Era. Three of his best-known works are Uncle Silas, Carmilla and The House by the Churchyard. His first success was published in 1851 But already in 1850, Le Fanu wrote the ne: The Mysterious Lodger, that he anonymously published in the Dublin University Magazine. After the death of his wife, April 28, 1858, Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu dedicated exclusively to writing fantasy novels. And he became the owner of the Dublin University Magazine which he sold in 1872. He finally died in 1873 in Dublin.

A short summary of the plot:

Laura, the only daughter of an English man installed in Styria, hosts without concern Carmilla, an unknown young that an accident has thrown in his way. Vampiric clues will appear in the countryside, in the castle and on the body of the girls. The mysterious friend which was very beautiful, celebs Laura declarations so ardent that the young woman is confident that at this time Carmilla is a young transvestite man.

The efforts by his father and two strong and friendly preceptors to protect her from evil have no effect: Laura becomes listless, paralyzed by the excess of love and the poor monster, half-woman, half-vampire who lavishes her. Laura is loved by Carmilla who kills slowly.

What makes this story gothic?

- the setting: it is in a strange and familiar setting of ruins and desolate forests in a very far country of the United Kingdom, the birthplace of the author. The atmosphere is very gloomy and frightening.

- the characters:

There is Carmilla, the main character. She is a vampire. She is strange because we do not learn much about her. Carmilla strikes by her great sensuality: she is described as very affectionate, voluptuous. It's a woman who is striking for its immense beauty: this vampire lady seduces his victims more than she attacks. Having had an accident, it is collected by Laura, a girl who misses much only because it is High by his father. Gradually they realize they have link and they are closely spaced more and more. Carmilla soon manifested a passionate love for Laura, and her feelings are mixed to the latter, which has a deep trouble before Carmilla beauty at the same time that a certain repulsion.

-the mood: the general mood of the story is very dark. This creates a mysterious story between dream and reality.

-the evolution: What strikes us most is the striking change of Laura from start to finish. She is hesitating at first, then she lets herself be swept away by the behavior of Carmilla.

THE IMAGINARY

The concept of imagination is truly present in this book. Indeed, we have to do a vampire and who, moreover, is attracted to girls and not by men.

Harry Potter

dans la catégorie The Gothic

I choose Harry Potter, books written by J.K. Rowling, because I think it is a gothic book. So I am going to talk about this wonderful saga.

Firstly, the story takes place in a castle wich is Poudlard and it look very gothic because it is gloomy and all around it there is a terrifying forest. Secondly, all of the students are wizards and witches, they are kind but some teachers looks very doubtful and anxious like the professor Rogue for example. Some parts of the castle are really misterious like "the secret room". Nobody really know where is this room and what kind of things are inside. There is some ghosts in Poudlard but most of them are kind and cool. There also are  "lively paints" because the people who are painted inside are moving and talking with students. Finally, there is Voldemort, the monster, the wicked character of the story who is extremely bad and angry with everybody but mostly with Harry Potter. So I think all of this details are making this story a gothic story.

This story is imaginary because there is some wizards and some witches, brooms are flying, there is some trolls, some ghosts and a lot of fantastic elements. They are making the story imaginary because everything seems perfectly normal.

Gothic Presentation - Dark Shadows

dans la catégorie The Gothic

Dark Shadows is an american movie directed by Tim Burton, realised in 2012 with Johnny Depp, Helena Boham Carter, Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green and Chloé Moretz. It's the adaptation of the Dan Curtis's TV serie realised in the 70's.

Tim Burton was born in 1958 in California. He is much inspired by the gothic style and the author Edgar Allan Poe. In 1979, he joined the Walt Disney Studios and started in the film's industry. He directed famous gothic films like Edward Sissorhands, Corpse Bride, Sleepy Hollow, Vincent ... He has too his fetish actors like for example Johnny Depp, Helena Boham Carter (his wife). Now, Tim Burton is a renowned worldwilde director.

In 1775, Angelique Bouchard fall in love with a rich owner of the city Collinswood, Barnabas Collins ; but it's not reciprocal. So Angelique decided to kill his parents and to simulate the suicide of his girldfriend, Cosette on top of a cliff. But it's not enough, the witch used of her power to metamorphose Barnabas in an immortal vampire and she locked him in a coffin for the eternity.

Two century after, the coffin is opened and Barnabas will try to retake his place in his mansion. With the help of his family (Elizabeth and Carolyn) he'll go to dethrone the economical empire of Angelique, named Angie and meet Victoria Winters who looks like Cosette...

What makes this film gothic ?

- The fact there are a vampire, a witch, a werewolf (Carolyn), a ghost and a mansion in this film shows already the classical gothic style, inclued in famours other stories like Dracula or the myth of the Salem's witches. Likewise, during the 3/4 of the film, it's the night ; it gives a mystical side. Also, the colors of the movie turn often around the pruple, the red and the black ; dark colors representative of the gothic style.

We can note there are two different epochs in the film, the XVIII and the XXI century; giving two looks ; classical and modern.

At the middle of the film, at the party organised by the Collins family, we see  the hard rock singer Alice Cooper singing his famous songs, No More Mister Nice Guy and Ballad Of Dwight Fry who deals with the madness, the love and the death ; classical elements of the hard rock and the gothic.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwH1BgOWUcU (extract)

- The character of Angie is really interesting. Eva Green plays always the role of the mad woman (also in Sin City : A Dame to Kill For). In Dark Shadows Angelique wants to destroy all that Barnabas owned to captive his attention and his love but she does destroy her. More her jalousy is important, more she break and comes closer to death. We have a kind of pity for her, she is sad. The fact of she is a witch removed all her feelings and reforces the dark gothic mood of the movie.

- The film is based on a dark and horrific story, but it is also humoristic. The mood is really sympatic and relaxed all in keeping this dark side of the gothic movie/story ; it's a mainstream movie so it is accessible to all age groups. There is a victorian side to the decor that we meet in many other fictions with mansions and manors. It's really intersting how Tim Burton has created this particular mood.

- We can note an evolution during all the movie ; Barnabas adapts well to the modern life and relearns to love and to Angie it's the perfect contrary ; she dies inside slowly. All the characters evolute since the Barnabas's arrival. The mood of the movie becomes more and more happy until the end.

- In Dark Shadows, there are reccurent themes as the night, the monsters, the vampire's life, death, the love. The story retakes in some the story of Dracula, where we find the same themes of the vampire, the love and death ; it's typic of the gothic vampire's stories.

What is the place of imaginary in your chosen extract ?

The movie Dark Shadows takes back the big lines of the gothic story ; and so the imaginary. There are a vampire, a witch,  a werewolf, a ghost, four characters fantastic in a realistic environment ; it makes dream. The night is much present during the film, it's mystical like the myth of the eternal love, and the death. Except his bloodlust, Barnabas appears as a nice monster and the kids who watch the film can imagine that he could be their friend and believe in the story. So we can conclude Tim Burton managed to create a specific dark and humoristic mood to Dark Shadows all in keeping the classical elements of the gothic story and the notion of the imaginary.

The nightmare before christmas - WATIER

dans la catégorie The Gothic

About the author : Tim Burton was born in 1958. He is a really famous american film director, artist and writer. He's known for doing creepy and dark films, indeed he has a really gothic, macabre and unique universe. He has directed movies you surely know, such as Edward Scissorhands in 1990, Corpse bride and Charlie and the chocolate factory both in 2005, Dark Shadows and Frenkenweenie, more recently, in 2012. We can see the same actors in almost every film he has done; Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, who, by the way, is married to Tim Burton.

Concerning the film : it has been released in 1993, and it's a stop motion musical fantasy film. Jack Skellington, who lives in Halloween Town, starts to get bored preparing Halloween's party every single year. One day, he goes into the wood and finds a door which leads him to another Town, the Chistmas' one. Fascinated by the lights and presents, Jack, when he comes back into his own town, decides to share what he just saw, and that this particular year, they wouldn't be celebrating Halloween; they would celebrate Christmas. So, he kidnaps Santa, wears his red costume and acts like him. Unfortunately, Jack doesn't know enough about Christmas, and that's why the party starts to get really creepy, morbid and scary looking. The presents are no longer toys, but scary boxes, and violent teddy bears.
This movie is obviously gothic because of its atmosphere.
First of all, Jack is a skeletton, which is not that common for a film. But since this is Tim Burton and his gothic ideas, we manage to understand. Jack is really tall, his arms and legs seems infinite, he's also really thin. He wears a black and white tuxedo. He can have cute face expressions, when he's happy, or really mean ones, and become scary whenever he's mad. The fact that Jack is a skeletton and that he can be spooky proves that this film belongs to the gothic genre.  Anyway, wether it's Sally and her ruler, Zero the ghost dog, the kids, or the mayor of it, Halloween town is composed of lots of creepy characters. They're all completely imaginary and scary.

Halloween Town is a really dark place, the streets are full of castles and cemetaries. There is, of course, no sun in the sky, it's often storming and we don't see that much daytimes, but more night times, with a huge moon surrounded by clouds. That is what makes the atmosphere even more ghoulish and not reassuring at all.

Also when Jack visits Christmas Town, he's himself surprised, because everybody is happy and laughing and he says that all of this is all new for him. He keeps repeating "what's this?" because his home town is so lugubrious he gets amazed by everything he sees. So except the small amount of joy and lights in the Christmas part, the movie is creepy, and so spooky.

To conclude I would say that despite the fact that there can be some hints of joy and colors, in general this film is a gothic one, and it has a ghoulish and macabre atmosphere, with great characters, as creepy as possible.
The imaginary notion is important because Jack travels through several worlds, which is kind of impossible, and all of the characters and Jack himself are also really surprising because we've never seen characters like these in any other movie, except for Tim Burton's ones of course.

The Woman In Black - Susan Hill

dans la catégorie The Gothic

Susan Hill is an english author of fiction of the 20th century. She writted a lot of novels like The Mist in the Mirror, I’m the King of the Castle. Most of the time,  her works are written with a descriptive gothic style, specially her ghost story, The Woman In Black. This story has been written in 1983. In 2012, an adaptation of the novels is released by James Watkins. This is the fifth adaptation of the story, after theater, radio, and tv.

Susan Hill has called this short novel « a ghost story » and « a story about evil », she is perfectly in the gothic tradition.

The Woman In Black, takes place in a small english town at the end of the 19th century. Arthur Kipps is a widowed lawyer and father. He has one son. A day, he is charged to the sale of a very strange house, the Eel Marsh House. The extract that I present you is about the first visit of the house.

The narrator is alone in the Eel Marsh House, he is walking and awakened by strange sounds. This is the moment, when he released the presence of the woman in black and the nature of the evil.

This story is a typical gothic story because of the ghoulish atmosphere. In fact, the setting is very important in this extract. The house is called the Eel Marsh House and she is deserted. Around the propriety, there is nothing, just a little town in few miles away. The house is surounded of a lake. The weather is bad in all the scene. The structure of the house is very old, and the main character has to use a canddle. All the elements are very disturbing.

The theme of the death is very aborded in the story because of the strange death of a lot of children who lived in the little town.

In this extract, we feel that the main character is a little affraid. He is alone in this big house, where nobody never go. But he feels a certain presence in this mysterious house. He has the sense of someone just having passed close to him and gone away. He heards some sounds very strange. A lot of elements makes that the conditions are very stressful like the torch that doesn’t work, In gothic story, the imanigation of the character are very important because it makes all the paranormal and the stress of the story.

Gothic story presentation - Black Butler (Wondering Utau)

dans la catégorie The Gothic

A few words about the author : Yana Toboso (枢 やな) is a japanese mangaka. She was born in January the 24th of 1984 in Warabi, Japan, and is now 29 years old. Her career began with Rust Blaster, a one-shot of six chapters published by the Square Enix editions, which takes place in a world where humans and vampires are forced to live side by side. But the work that made her famous is Black Butler (Kuroshitsuji, 黒執事), her main series since 2006 and one of the most popular manga of our generation, which is sold in Asia, in the United-States and in many european countries. Her readers love her fine drawing line and her precious and baroque graphics which are recognizable anywhere.

A picture of Yana Toboso.

A short summary of the plot : In the victorian Great-Britain, Ciel Phantomhive, the thirteen-year-old heir of the Phantomhive family, must manage the famous toys' company that he leads while investigating on unavowable politic affairs as the Queen's Dog, an hereditary responsability of his family. For this, he has Sebastian Michaelis, his mysterious and fautless butler whose nobody knows where he comes from. But, in front of inexplicable phenomenons like Jack the Ripper, a strange circus kidnapping children or Gods of Death searching for missing souls, even a demon may fails...

Ciel Phantomhive and Sebastian Michaelis.

What makes this story gothic ?

The story takes place in Great-Britain, at the end of the nineteenth century, under the Queen Victoria's reign, and most of the time in London, or in the Phantomhive's Manor, which is isolated in the countryside. In the Book of Murder's arc, a violent thunder comes up and the manor's inhabitants and guests are stuck in the house until the end of the storm. This climate of promiscuity and tension facilitates the series of inexplicable murders which follows.

Furthermore, the manor is bursting with secret passages and alarms to warn the domestics of anyone's intrusion. In the Book of Circus' arc, when the circus' members are coming to the Manor to kill Ciel, the domestics are well-aware and follow them in the house thanks to a system of bells like the ones which are usually used to call the domestics without moving.

→ The character of Sebastian Michealis makes this story more gothic. As Dracula, we gradually learn more about his evil nature. At the beginning, he attracts the reader's attention because of the perfect way he is managing his butler's job in despite of the negative attitude of his master and the incapable domestics. In the first chapter, he succed to save his master's reception whereas the afternoon has been a complete disaster as if the domestics were doing everything they could to prevent Sebastian from doing his job. He very handsome, charismatic and athletic while being quite young because as a demon he reflects the humans' most secret desires. Most of the time, he has a rather superior smile and sometimes is obviously laughing at the human race, but he cannot stop studying and observing them « as a hobby » he says. Furthermore, as Dracula and other characters from gothic stories, Sebastian's eyes are reflecting his demonic nature. When he uses his demon's powers or when he is striken by a strong emotion, his eyes are no longer human's and become red and skinny in the middle like a snake's ones. He seems immortal, one cannot be hurt by any human's weapon. Sebastian has a great strength and can have an influence on animals' behaviour, like the character of Dracula when he calms down the horses of the carriage.

→ In despite of some scenes which are more comical, the general mood of the story is very dark. It is created by the tackled issues like the death, present in all the investigations of the Queen's Dog and personified in the Gods of Death or Grim Reapers (Shinigami, 死神) ; and also present in the past of Ciel, whose the parents were killed when he was younger. Some scenes and characters are very bloody and merciless ; the author uses suspens and mystery created by the contact between the real and normal world with the demons and shinigami's one to keep her readers captivated, and it works, when you see how famous this manga is now.

→ There is a definite evolution from the beginning to the actual end of the story. The characters are confronted by much more violence and crazy investigations. The first affair, where members of the britain underworld kidnapped Ciel to blackmail him, was quickly resolved by the help of Sebastian ; but in the last intrigues, Sebastian cannot but only helping his master and is almost helpless, so Ciel has to more and more learn how to manage without his butler. In the Weston College's arc, he has to go to the school as a simple pupil and cannot bring with him any of his domestics (even if Sebastian also becomes a college's teacher to keep a close eye on his master), so he is then exposed to the other pupils' violence.

Black Butler has some recurrent themes :

  • The death : in the investigation of Jack the Ripper, on dead prostitutes ; in the Noah Circus' arc, where little children are kidnapped and killed to have their bones ; in the Book of Murder's arc, by the successive deaths of the guests whereas they all have an alibi ; in the Campania affair, where dead bodies are bring back to life by the experimentations of an ignorant scientist and a denied shinigami, then escape from their control and begin to kill all the boat's passengers.

  • The humans' nature : numerous Black Butler characters are showing a certain face at the beginning and then reveal their true nature ; this is the case of the Ciel's aunt, who is helping « Jack the Ripper » to kill prostitutes and wants to kill the count because he looks like her sister ; of the Weston College's prefects who are able to kill to preserve the traditions and the dignity of their school ; of the members of the Noah Circus who are nice and welcome Ciel and Sebastian when they rejoin them as Smile and Black, but then are no longer nice and welcoming when they learn their true identities. But Ciel used to lie too and recognize it, when he uses some naive people to achieve his aim.

  • The humans' responsability : at the end, we can notice that the mortals are responsible of all the troubles that happened in this story, and imaginary creatures are only a help, a "tool" that helps them to achieve their aim : in the Jack the Ripper's arc, Grell Sutcliff, the deviant shinigami, appears and decides to help Madam Red to take her revenge only after she killed the first prostitute. Even if Sebastian is a demonic creature, he is bound to Ciel by the Pact and most of the time only acts on order of his master ; he says himself that he is nothing but his "dog". In the Weston College's arc, Undertaker and Doctor Ryan Stoker introduce the "Bizarre Dolls" in the school only because the prefects of Weston needed them to hide the fact that they killed some pupils. So, even if Black Butler contains some fantastic creatures which could discourage some people to read it, this is still a story about humanity and the consequences of its actions.

→ Notion : the imaginary :

Black Butler is a complete fantastic story, even if it takes place in a real time and place. The author uses fantastic characters and figures, as the demon, a famous figure in all the societies and religions, which represents the evil and tries to pull the humans to the « dark side » (as he does with Ciel : the pact that they entered into promises that when Sebastian would concrete Ciel's wish, he would have his soul ; during all the story, he tries to « prepare » the soul of his master so it would be very « tasty » when he will have it) ; the shinigami, which are a real part of the japanese mythology, are a real industry which is recover all the dead souls, to verify and classify them. They are neutral characters who have to not to take sides for the humans or for Heavens ; but some shinigami are escaping to this law like Grell Sutcliff, an uncontrollable agent who takes the nickname of Jack the Ripper and kills people who are not in the Death List. The story also talks about humans trying to bring back dead bodies to life, like, on the Campania, the couple of parents who did not succeed to forget their daughter's death and uses the ignorant Doctor Ryan Stoker (whose name refers to the Dracula's author, Bram Stocker), manipulated by a shinigami, to bring her daughter and other dead bodies back to life ; but it didn't work and the "Bizarre Dolls" escape the Doctor's control and kill almost all the passengers of the boat ; this proves that even this old human desire about defeating death is only a dream and that imagination has its limits, even in this world. But Black Butler also has some kind of reality, a dark reality whose we don't like to hear about, when it talks about the human's nature and the murderers and other crimes that the mortals are ready to make in the name of a reason that seems good to them.

A shinigami (William T. Spears).

The film Sleepy Hollow has been directed by Tim Burton in 1 999. What makes it a gothic film?

Tim Burton is an American film maker born in 1958. He realizes films but also cartoons that take place in morbid environments. Specialized in the gothic genre, he is famous for his ghoulish but fantasy films that mix horrible and humorous items. He frequently caricatures gothic elements, which make his films have a touch of dark humour. He has often worked with the actors Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter. His works are recognizable because of the thin and pale face of the characters, especially in his cartoons.

He directed the fantasy horror film Sleepy Hollow in 1999. Adapted from The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irwin, the story is about a raw investigator, Ichabod Crane, who has just arrived in Sleepy Hollow, New York and is directly embroiled at a gruesome puzzle sustained by all the people : some of them are mysteriously decapitated. Ichabod has to find out who is the murderer by digging out old forgotten calamities that occurred decades ago.

The story takes place in an isolated village of the eighteenth century, plunged from start to finish in the fog. There is a dark forest where the trees have no leaf and look parched. Ichabod Crane is a tall and thin man with messy hair. He is marginal and frightening, he is introduced as a man who blows in someone's ear to speak to that person and he is not afraid to carry out an autopsy on a corpse at a period in which it is considered as blasphemous.

The mood of the story is disturbing : the characters look all really weird and suspicious, blame each other. The director did not try to hide the people that are beheaded, and some of the inhabitants make tasteless jokes about all the murders.

There is a growing sense of suspense from the beginning to the end : we see each time a bit better the headless rider, and each Ichabod's progress in his investigation seems to complicate it even more.

The recurrent elements of the gothic are the place, with the isolated village and the dark woods; the characters, with a weak and young woman that pass out; the fact that there is a supernatural creature, a more dead than alive, to eliminate. Plus there are three women who are or try to be witches and play with occult forces.

The story is about powerful witches who are beneficial or evil, about an old psychotic murderer who get of his grave to obey to someone who has stolen the head of his corpse : the plot is imaginary because of its preternatural dimensions. But it is also full of elements such as a young orphan who is not helped by the inhabitants when he loses his father, or as the complexity of the relationships between people that could not be seen during the end of the twentieth century but are shown there.

Sleepy Hollow is a gothic film because of its plot and of its setting, but also by its characters and by the influence of its director.

Corpse Bride- Tim Burton ( berenice vialard)

dans la catégorie The Gothic

Most of the time, since the 20 century, to speak about gothic novels or movies, we use the example of Tim Burton’s. This famous American director  ( born in 1958) made lots of movies and animations movies in association with other film directors, he realized some animations movies based on the on the technique of the stop motion, and the evolution of puppets in a real decoration set. He is famous for right some stories, with lots of black humor, with strange creatures, and the important influence of the ghoulish. He is famous, for example, for his movie Dark Shadow, a gothic movie about vampires. Tim burton has two favorite actors, who have played in lots of his movies: Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter. We can’t say that he is only a gothic director, because he realized also fantastic comedies. But this genre has influenced a lot his movies, with, most of the time, a heavy and lugubrious atmosphere, and fantastic creatures.

In 2005, he realized in association with Mike Johnson and John August, Corpse bride. This American animation movie is inspired of the dead bride’s legend, a typical gothic legend, ghoulish and stressful. The atmosphere of the movie is stressful too, because all elements and characters are in black, grey, blue and white, there aren’t many colors and it creates a lugubrious atmosphere. The movie’s music, likes sounds are disturbing.

Corpse bride takes place during the XIX century, in a small village. The story is about a man, Victor Van Dort, who has to get married with Victoria Everglot. At the beginning, this wedding is only a forced marriage, organized by the parents, who think win money since this union. But as incredible as it can be, between the two young peoples, it’s immediately the love at first sight. But some terrified elements will happen and waste this rising love. In fact, a dead bride, Emily will appear from the death’s world. Unintentionally, Victor will be engaged with this corpse alive, and he will, during the entire movie, try to cancel this engagement. He wants to get married with Victoria, his real soul mate. But during this short time during which Victor disappears, she has to get married with a strange man, Emily’s murderer and former husband. During all the movie, Victor try to return in the real world, to live his love with victoria.

This movie is a typical gothic story, with a ghoulish atmosphere. The settings are the most important elements in corpse bride, to represent the gothic. First, Victoria’s castle is an old castle, with big corridors, and nobody around, and that’s disturbing. Later, when Emily makes Victor travels in the death’s world, he meets undead peoples, going up of their coffin. These supernatural events and spooky characters are typical elements of the gothic genre.  The death’s theme is recurrent in this movie, and from the beginning, to the end, the terror is going up, when Victor discovers this other world, when undead peoples appears or when Emily’s murderer appear, and try to accomplish it again with Victoria. The general atmosphere, oppressed, is typical of the gothic, and characters, seems like undead too, there are disturbing and can affrays us.

The imaginary notion is really important and present in Corpse bride. First, the setting in which the action happen is unrealistic. The death’s world is what makes this movie influenced by the imaginary. Characters like undead peoples, and the bride, dead, but alive when Victor asks here to engage with him unintentionally, are also elements of the imaginary. The imaginary is present in all the animation movie, settings, characters, and the events are imaginary facts. And that makes the story gothic, because this genre is based essentially based on the imaginary notion.

The Tale of the Three Brothers - Ree

dans la catégorie The Gothic

A few words about the author and the animation director

The Tale of the Three Brothers is a short animated film included in the movie: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1. This short film is a team work because the scenario has been written by J.K. Rowling in her book, but the three minute animated sequence has been directed by Ben Hibon.

Joane Rowling (her author name is J.K. Rowling) is an English author. She was born in 1965, and is mainly known for the Harry Potter book series, which were published from 1997 to 2007.  She is not known as a gothic author, as the Harry Potter books belong to the fantasy genre. However, this tale, included in the last Harry Potter book and presented as an old tale told by wizards to their children, can be considered as a gothic story.

Ben Hibon is a Swiss animation director who was born in 1977. He created sequences for video games and horror movies before directing the animated short film The Tale of The Three Brothers in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1. He might soon be directing Pan, a dark contemporary version of the story of Peter Pan. As Ben Hibon directed only one short film which belongs to the gothic genre, he can’t be considered as a gothic artist.

The plot

This short film is about three wizards who avoid death by making a bridge over a deep river which was too dangerous to cross. Death feels cheated and pretends to congratulate the three brothers on their magic by giving them presents: the most powerful wand ever made, a stone which can recall others from death, and a cloak which makes anything invisible.  Two of the brothers are driven mad by the power of their gifts, thus permitting Death to take them. The third brother is a humble man. He keeps on the cloak until he is very old so that death can’t find him, and then takes it off and accepts his death peacefully.

What makes it a gothic short film ?

-The setting: the short film starts with a voice-off saying: “There were once three brothers who were traveling along a lonely, winding road at twilight.” This sentence describes a gothic setting: a lonely, remote and dark place, where mysterious things can happen. The setting seems alive, as the voice-off says: “winding road “. Moreover, the colours of the movie are only black, white, and golden, and the set and the characters are like shadows made of cut paper. These elements give an impression of mystery and dark magic which are features of the gothic genre.

-Characters: the character which belongs the most clearly to the gothic genre is the allegory of death. Indeed, in addition to his ghoulish nature, this character is represented as an oddly-shaped skeleton with a ripped cloak and a hood. Because of this cloak, the spectator can’t see his body entirely, thus giving an impression of mystery. This character is cunning and devilish, and he represents the evil in the gothic stories.

The three brothers are travelling on a road they don’t know, and they are brought face to face with an evil and threatening character. They are easily deceived by Death because of their gullibility. They are like Isabella in The Castle of Otranto and lots of gothic characters: confronted with danger and evil in a place they don’t know.

-General mood: the presence of the allegory of death makes the atmosphere ghoulish, in addition to the successive deaths of the three brothers. Furthermore, the first brother has his throat ripped by another wizard and the second brother hangs himself: these are violent events, which make the atmosphere dreadful.

-Growing sense of terror: the spectator knows that Death wants to take the three brothers and that he will succeed because he is very powerful. In this way, each death is like a countdown until the younger brother’s death, that the spectator likes because he is humble and kind. The spectator dreads this character’s death, which seems to get closer at any minute, thus making the atmosphere more and more nerve-racking. However, at the end, the spectator understands that the cloak of invisibility enables the third brother to hide from Death, and he feels relieved when he greets Death “as an old friend.”

-Recurrent themes: First, the atmosphere of suspense is given by the threat that is lingering over the third brother and whether he will be killed or not. Also, supernatural events happen. Indeed, even though the use of wands and magic is normal because the rest of the movie is set in a magical world, the appearance of Death is inexplicable and mysterious. We can also note that the first brother is “drunk with the power of the wand” and the second brother is “driven mad with hopeless longing”, which are high and overwrought emotions. Then, the three brothers (even though they are not women) are threatened by a powerful, impulsive, tyrannical character. Moreover, the crows which are flying in the sky during the film are a metonymy of horror and death. Finally, we can notice several words which belong to the vocabulary of the gothic: “magical”, “hopeless”, “sad”, “lonely”, “dangerous” “angry”, “death”.

Place of the imaginary

In this short film, the imaginary has a very important place. Indeed, above all, the story takes place in an imaginary world where people have wands and magical powers. Besides, the appearance of the allegory of death, with a hood and a cloak, belongs to the imaginary. Likewise, the gifts that the three brothers receive belong to the imaginary. Indeed, the “wand more powerful than any in existence” is an imaginary object, which can’t exist in the real world. Then, the stone which has the power to recall others from Death is something lots of people would dream about, but that is only real in their imagination. Finally, the cloak of invisibility may be created by scientists in a few centuries, but for now it only belongs to the imaginary…

Summary of the plot :

The story is about Emily St. Aubert, a young French woman. At the beginning of the novel, her mother dies. With her father, with who she shares a love for nature, she goes on a journey in which they meet Valancourt, a man who also loves nature. Emily and him quickly fall in love, but when her father dies, she has to go to live with her aunt, who is getting married with an Italian nobleman. After that, they move to Venise and the husband decides to confine Emily and his wife at his castle called Udolpho. But after a few adventures, Emily is finally reunited with her lover.

A presentation of a few characters :

Emily St-Aubert : Almost the entire novel is written from her point of view. It’s a beautiful girl who loves books, nature, poetry and music. She is courageous, obedient, vertuous, resourceful, sensitive, and self-reliant.

Mr. St-Aubert : It’s Emily’s father. He dies early in the novel, during their travel. He warns Emily on his death bed to not become a victim of her feelings but to acquire command over her emotions. His relationship with the Marchioness de Villeroi is one of the main mysteries of the story.

Valancourt : He is the younger brother of the Count Duvarney. He falls in love with Emily. He is a beautiful and enthusiastic young man with a noble character.

Mrs. Cheron (Montoni) : She is the sister of the dad of Emily. She is selfish and only think about the material aspect of life and of his appearance. She is cold to Emily at the beginning, but near her death, when Emily aids and comforts her, her character softens gradually.

Montoni : He is the villain of the story and the second husband of Mrs.Cheron. He is a cruel man towards his wife and Emily.

What makes this story gothic ?

Supernatural inexplicable events : During her stay at Udolpho, many bizarre and seemingly supernatural occurrences frighten Emily.

Emotion / Women in distress : in the story, there is a moment about a black veil and the reader doesn’t know what is behind it. At this moment, the reader isn’t afraid because of the description Emily does about what she sees, but by her reaction : she faints.

Women threatened by a powerful, impulsive, tyrannical male : At the beginning, Montoni wants to marry Emily with one of his friend. Of course, Emily doesn’t love him. After, he confines Emily and her aunt in his castle.

The imaginary

The imaginary insn’t really present in the novel because of the religious beliefs of the author, which prohibit her to encourage superstition. Indeed, the surnatural events are all explained at the end of the novel.
But even if there isn’t a lot of imaginary in the book, it’s present, like we can see with this quotes : «imaginary fears», «imaginary terrors», «imaginary evils».
The imaginary is also present with the black veil mystery because the reader doesn’t know what there is behind it, so he has to use his imagination because even Emily doesn’t reveal what there is behind. Indeed, we only learn that there is «no picture».

The raven - Anouk DUBUC

A few words about the author Edgar Allan Poe:

Edgar Allan Poe was born January 19 1809, he was a poet, a novelist, a playwright, a critical art and an American editor. He was a key person in the American romanticism. Most of his books belong to science fiction or fantastic genre. He was considered has the detective novel creator. His first novel was The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket has been a failure, then came January 1845 and Poe published the Raven that was an immediate success. Poe's wife died two years after the success of the Raven he then considered to remarry but died at the age of 40 in Baltimore.

A short summary of the Raven's plot:

The narrator was taking a nap trying to forget Lenore's dead.  Suddenly the door knocked which scared him. He tried to calm down convincing himself it was just a visitor and nothing else. He apologized not to hear the door. He opened the door but nobody was there. He tried to call Lenore his “beloved” but no one answered. Coming back to his room he heard noises coming from his window so he decided to open it. A majestic raven came out of his it.

Why can we say this is a gothic story?

-       The setting: the scene takes place in narrator's room, the night is quite lugubrious, it's December time.

-       Narrator's description: The narrator seems to be a caring person, fearful and curious. He’s also sad because his love died recently. Since he has a Pallas's bust we can suppose he is interested in the mythology. There is no physical description of the narrator.

-       Story ambiance: the narrator immediately sets the ambiance by telling us this is a lugubrious December night. We can also feel he is scared as his wife just died and this might lead us thinking of a ghost story at first.

-       Evolution of the terror: There is a growing feeling of terror when he hesitated to open the door. He thought Lenore was coming back from the dead. When he came back to his room the feeling of terror was growing up. His fright suddenly vanished when he opened the window and noticed the sound was just a raven trying to get in his place. The terror’s mood turned progressively into an angry mood because of the raven keeping on saying “never again” the narrator thought the bird was a demon.

-       The notion of imaginary in the book The imaginary in this story have an important place although the way it is written makes it completely credible. We have in the one hand the raven talking and repeating “not anymore” and on the other hand the narrator who thinks he heard his wife returning from the dead. With these things we can see that imaginary is the pillar of the story.

Gothic novel : Pauline, by Alexandre Dumas.

  • The author : Alexandre Dumas.

Alexandre Dumas was a French writer, born in 1802, and died in 1870. He is close to the romantic author, and he turned to theater.

This author wrote historical dramas, like Henry III and his court, (in 1829). He also writes historical novels, like the trilogy The Three Musketeers (in 1844), or The Queen Margot (in 1845).However, Pauline, is his first novel, and his first gothic novel, published in 1838.

  • Summary :

This novel is about the meeting between Alexandre Dumas, character and narrator of the book, and his old friend Alfred de Nerval. The latter tells him the fascinating story of Pauline, who died a year earlier. She went through many adventures with Alfred de Nerval.

  • What makes this story gothic ?

The setting, atmosphere, and feelings.

The action takes place in different places, all scary: abbey, vault, secret passage, secret doors, ruin, cemetery, old building, dark corridors... A mysterious and frightening atmosphere surrounds these places.

The scenes are nightmarish. We feel the unease and anxiety of the young woman. We perceive her concerns, doubts, interrogations, her discomfort, anxiety, and fear … All these places are, more or less, a summary of the different places where the action takes place in all gothic novels, with recurrent feelings such as fear, distress, doubts and anxieties.., and a mysterious and frightening atmosphere specific to the gothic genre.

The characters.

Pauline : Before her meeting with the count, Pauline Meulien is a girl a bit naive, but intelligent. She has everything for her: young, rich, and beautiful.

However, her personnality is changing rapidly through her adventures: she becomes more subjective, with a different view on the world. She becomes mature. Finally, she becomes very realistic with her life experiences.

Alfred de Nerval : is a young aristocrat, aged twenty years old. He knows how to fight with sword as a gun, ride a horse .. It's a brave person, he knows how to keep his calm.Alfred is the confidant and protector of Pauline. Beside, his only reason for living is Pauline. The latter will unveil her story because it sees it as his "brother". But, Alfred has stronger feelings
The characters of Gothic novels are often derived from stereotypes:young women persecuted, like the character of Pauline, a man torn between Reason and Passion, like the character of Alfred. They are put in recurring situations: identity theft, persecution, murder ... like the characters of the Gothic novel, Pauline.

Alexandre Dumas associated in Pauline all the ingredients of the Gothic novel, with a romantic trend : storm in the sea, shipwreck, moonlit night that reveals the shadows, an abbey in ruins, joined to an abandoned castle, with dark underground corridors, the killing of innocent people, the kidnapping of an innocent woman, a poor lover who becomes a hero with a heart noble and faithful ...

However, it is important to note that this is a book that is influenced by the Romantic movement, it is not only a Gothic book. He is close to the black novel.

  • Immaginery :

Imagination : Who is created by the imagination, which only exists in the imagination. ex : Imaginary fears.

Writing allows to the author to express his thoughts, his world. His imagination coming to life.

Gothic gives a considerable place for imagination, the suggestion, the supernatural, the superstition, the magic, anxiety, strangeness and fear. It allows to articulate and highlight, generally, our fears and anxieties, with recurring themes such as death, women persecuted or in danger, secrets and mysteries, inexplicable events in frightening places, dark and empty. The themes are present in Pauline.

This literary genre allows us to imagine things like people, monsters, or stories that have happened, because the facts are not rational.

In Pauline, the facts are inexplicable: we imagine why and how the elements elapsed. For example, Pauline arrived, suddenly, in a vault. She does not remember.

The places are secret and fascinating; we wonder and imagine what they hide. For example, the abbey ruins, or secret passages are an inspiration, a nostalgic and fantasy world to explore.
This imagination is created by a certain misunderstanding of the facts, then it stimulates the history.

A NEW PERIOD !

Clara Reeve (1729- 1807) is known by her gothic novel. She is the Thomas Reeve's, english minister, daughter. He initiate her to literature, very young. Her fisrt original book was the Champion of virtue, published in 1777, when she had 50 years old. In the second edition it's named the old english Baron .It's a rewrite of the castle of Otranto, by Walpole. It was a success. She write the two Mentors, too, in 1783. The novelist was in Gothic period (1790 - 1830). She has an unpretentious style. She is  an exclusively romantic writer. Reeve had a strong influence. The author isn't a film maker.

Summary

Résultat de recherche d'images pour "the olde english baron" This is the first illustration gived by the 1777 edition

The story is about Sir Philip Harclay, who returned, from his travels, to England, his native country. He had served the glorious King Henry the Fifth. The main character discovered that his friend, Arthur Lord Lovel was ded. He met Edmund who will help Philip. The Lovel's castle and domain was stole by someone else. Something strange appear, in this castel and disclose some secrets. After a series of surprising revelations and frenetic events, the crim of the usurper and the heir legitimacy are finally discovered. The story is resolves with a battle. This a novel wich evoke the antic and modern romance.

It can be interesting to wonder what makes this story gothic ?

Gothic elements include in the novel:

There are a lot of important character :

-There are Edmund Twyford, who is a farmer but similar at Arthur Lord Lovel. He is moving and sincere.

-Arthur Lord Level is the Richard Lord Lovel's son and, Harclay's firend.

-Sir Walter Lovel is one of the castle hair.

-The Baon Fitz Owen live in the castle. He is Richard Wenlock's father.

-The main character is a christian soldier honnorable. Philip make an investigation, to know more about the family who live in his friend's castle. So an atmosphere of suspense is created. Harclay wants to know why the castle is not gives at the heir, Sir Walter Lovel. That provokes a curiosity from the reader. In fact, there are a growing sense of suspense with castle's mistery. We want to know what's happened after the Arthur Lord Lovel death !!

1.Setting in a castle. The action takes place in an old castle occupied by Arthur's spirit and Fitz-Owen's family. It's haunsted. This domain contains secrets. We can find the horro-gothic with ghost.

2. An atmosphere of mystery and suspense. This effect is pervaded by a threatening feeling, a fear enhanced by the unknown. This atmosphere is advanced when Harclay see only a glimpse of something. The plot itself is built around a mystery, a disappearance, and some other inexplicable event. People disappear or show up dead inexplicable. Events supernatural appear, Arthur Lord Lovel's and Lady Lovel's ghost came in the castel. People are terrified by uncommon noises and strange apparition. That explain why Sir Walter Lovel, the heir, sold the castle of his ancestor and leave England. I probably could react like Walter. The gossip said that he was perturbed every night. The reader have shiver. We can see lugubrious scene. The goal of the dark and mysterious setting is to create a sense of unease and foreboding, contributing to create a particolar atmosphere.

3. An old prophecy is connected with the castle and its inhabitants (either former or present). The prophecy is confusing. "What could it mean? The both ghost give benediction at Edmund Twyford. The both ghost want to give a message but what is it ? And Twyford is phisicly similar at Arthur Lord Lovel.

4. Omens, portents, visions. Philip have a disturbing dream vision, or some phenomenon may be seen as a portent of coming events. During his sleep, many strange and incoherent dreams arose to his imagination. He thought he received a message from his friend Lord Lovel, to come to him at the castle. Arthur is ded but in this dream, he said that he control wich person could enter in his domain. Lord Lovel ask to Sir Philip to safe his castle. Sir Harclay was not afraid, he wants to help his firend ! We are admirating, because at his place, I certainly run away. When Philip Harclay went in the domain, he discovered Arthur's armor covered with blood. After an invisible hand led him on a place to prepare a fight. BUT ! It was a dream.

5. Supernatural or otherwise inexplicable events. Edmund is victim of supernaturel moments. One time he is in the obscurity because the wind blew out his lamp. He felt disagreeable sensation. He implored divine assistance. He saw a brillant light in front of him. There are a presence of divine. The lector want to understand. We can find a caracteristic of gothic element, irrationel.

6. Emotion. The narration can be highly sentimental, and the characters are often overcome by anger, sorrow, surprise, and especially, terror. Crying and emotional speeches are frequent for Edmund. He is apprehensive. There are some emotional moments. For example when Edmund give his liberty at Philip to serve him. There are a lot of chevalry vertu too.

7. Two sides. There are Fitz-Owen which is the evil incarnation and Edmund or Harclay wich are in the good side.

There are an evolution in the Philip's investigation because he met new character and understand the situation.

At the end we understand that Twyford is the last heir of Arthur Lord Lovel, and that Sir Walter Lovel went away because he wanted to find his son in Palestine. Finally this is a good end !

The is an antique story with the medieval aspect and modern with the fiction.

This is a rewrite of the castle of Otranto, so it have a gothic influence.

We can find the gothic genre with the unconventionnal story.

So the recurrent themes are : mystery, darkness, supernatural, castel, piety, loyalty, nobility, cooperation.

The place of immaginary

Sir Harclay is invaded by fantastic images. The imaginary is omnipresent. This is the plot of this gothic novel. In fact, Reeve had been engaged. She tansfomed ancestry gothic with the immaginary integration. She stimulate the story. The myth of gothic ancestry was useful for Clara Reeve because it's adaptable. There are an intrusion of fiction elements interesting because that create a mix of styles. This is a mix between historical and psycholoical vison. The old English Baron is based on imaginary society, because the conflict came from supernatural events. The fiction create an excessive show of emotion, like Edmund show it. There are a clear opposition. This is like a « literature customisation ». That encouraging the reader to believe in myth in most others aspects. The author can give a personnal touch.
