Theme 1 : Deadly Jobs

A short text inspired by Dickens.

Remember the little book we studied.

You can listen to the text on internet. Just ask me.

The book Deadly Jobs was written by Philippe Boston.

This book was written for French students learning English.

This book is a short novel.

It was inspired by Charles Dickens' work.

Charles Dickens lived in Great Britain in the 19th century.

During that period, the British monarch was Queen Victoria.

This is the reason why we speak of the Victorian period.

In Victorian time, the industrial revolution took place. We speak of the Industrial Revolution.

Poor children did not go to school and instead they worked in mines, factories (because of their small size) and they also sweep chimneys.

Deadly Jobs was inspired by Dickens' book called Oliver Twist.

In the first part of book the author gives us information about the British society during the Industrial Revolution  and the horrible truth about England  when young children were treated like slaves.

He explains the important role played by the writer Charles Dickens to describe these terrible working conditions.

In the second part is a dark and miserable fiction of a child being exploited for profit.

The year is 1832 and a young boy tries to stay alive doing the most dangerous job of all.
