To my opinion we could allow people to design their own babies but with rules and a strict legislation. What I want to say is that, people who have problems to have children, or who have a member of their family who has serious diseases could access to that practice in order to help the couple or the member of the family.We could also allow this practice to people who have a genetical serious disease.
Moreover, design babies don’t have to become a factory to fashion perfect kids ; always more beautiful, intelligent or disease resistant… It’s not that goal that we, the medicine, the politicians are researching. It’s not a trivial act, it have consequences, the birth of a new human being ! What’s why the government will have to create laws where conditions to have access to that pratice wiil be specified.The government have also to watch out about frauds and parallel interventions.
Finally if the government decides allow designing baby, it should have cheaper prices for poor people, or those ones who are in the lower class.
The first thing that must be said is that children aren’t the property of their parents. Even if parents are babies’ creators, they mustn’t abuse of their position and their power. As far as I’m concerned, I think that if the parents modify their children in order to make them genius or simply what they dream to become, it’s a morbid idea. In fact, parents mustn’t have to lock up their children in a dream. Moreover, I think that children are allowed to choose themselves their future. However, if they make a genetically modified child with the aim of helping one of their children who is diseased like Katie; the practise isn’t blameworthy and it’s completely conceivable. Even so, I believe that it’s a dangerous way because parents could be tempted by a “super kid fashion” and change the original identity of the baby. To sum up, for my part, I think that this practise should be allowed but only for particular positions like serious diseases.

In my opinion we can allow this practice but only with laws to make sure people doesn't abuse of this because that can escalated quickly : the people might want to have child who becoming more perfect at each generation. Then the children will be classified according to their ADN and then the children who doesn't have a perfect ADN will have difficulties to be hire for a job according to their skills. With this practice, if we don't make sure to pass the laws who take care of it, some people might want to abuse of the babies' designation to have the most perfect child who was ever born on the Earth and then the principle of equality in the declaration of the rights of Man and of the Citizens will not be respected.
Moreover this practice, in a way, is a little disgusting for me because implicitly if the people want a perfect child with the practice of the babies' designation that means that they cannot love their child if he isn't born with all the skills and the characteristics promise by the doctor at the moment of the child's creation.
Finally for me this practice can be a good thing but only for the people who need it like the ones who are sick or if this people conceived a baby, this one will have a high chance of genetic disease and only if there is laws who are adapted to control the situation then the people can't abuse it.
I think that this question is complicated. On one hand it presents inconveniences. Because if everybody could design his baby there would be only perfect people. Indeed the parents would choose beautiful, intelligents, good, serious children. People in society would be any such, like robots. And the births would have almost nothing more natural. On an other hand, design his child can have advantages. For example in case a genetic modification would allow the child not to be sick, or would allow to have the possibility of curing a member of the family. I think if it was authorized it would be necessary that it makes with precautions, that it is regulated and possible under specials and particulars conditions.
Designing babies is a delicate and pretty unknown practise. I believe then than it’s necessary to put legislation around it, so people don’t go too far and it doesn’t become a huge mess. As a start, it could only be allowed to people who are in a medical emergency (such as Katie’s parents who needed to save their child), because it would be a real and useful help to them. Also, I think that the future parents should be asked and tested a little bit before they take this kind of decision, and professionals should guide them through this experience, because once they have a designer babies, if people (authorities, doctors or else) become aware that it was a mistake to let them get into it (the child is mistreated or the parents just can’t handle the responsability of having a child that is not directly their own), it’s irreversible. Indeed, people who aren’t mentally stable for example, couldn’t be allowed to design their babies. As well as those who might have an unfavourable police record (people who are known to rape children should obviously be forbidden to have designer babies…).
So I think that governments must make laws about designing babies to avoid excesses.
Really I haven't got any opinion about this question but I I can say that it would not disturb me if the parents can design their own babies. I don't find this idea shocking because having a baby is a desire of the parents so I can accept that the baby should be exactly as they wish. Moreover, it would involve a lot of progress, like the end of diseases.
Sure it would create many problems too, such as the increase of inequalities between the poor and the rich. This is why I think that the government has to create legislation and rules about this practice. For example, the right to choose the future child health status should be allowed and accessible to everybody, the poor and the rich. The choice of less important things, like physical appearance or mental character, should be considered as a must or maybe should be forbidden.
To my mind , the "baby design" has to be managed , governed and limited with some rules.
For me, the practice of designing babies should be allowed but only on certain conditions.
People could have recourse to this practice only if they have health problems that they could pass down on their child.
But, to have recourse to this process, to create a baby compatible with another child for curing him, should be forbidden. Indeed, it is not fair for the designed baby because, in certain cases, he could spend many years in hospital, having surgery to cure his brother or his sister. And he is not desired for himself but only for what he can give. He risks to be left behind in his family and not have a happy childhood.
And the design shouldn’t be complete. Only things about diseases should be modified but things like qualities and faults shouldn’t be change because it’s the personality and makes a person unique. And if you make people without faults, all people are the same and qualities are not considered like qualities anymore.
Also my opinion is shared on the question to allows the selection and the creation of baby. Indeed in one of side there is a fact that to choose his child is very hard to live for every member of concerned the family but in the other side one we have here the possibility of giving a future has children who not have no it (for exemple in the case to have an another baby in the purpose to cure his child with this baby).
I think that a family have the right to have an other baby for cure their child. It their duty to do everything in their power to bring the best to their child. But there is a problem connected to this practice. Indeed the problem live in the living conditions in wich the new children live.
Maybe these children will live badly the fact of having been born only with the aim of saving them brothers and sisters. It can creat tension between brothers and sisters or between parents and the new children. This situations are really bad and for avoid that it occurs, if the government allows this practice, he has to etablich some rules and precotion. For exemple he can creat a psychological test that the parents have to pass in the aim of knowing if they can be good parents for their futur child.
It also raise the ethical problem. Indeed there is the question to choose his chil. If this eggs choice is allows taht raise the problem who is to creat the besser child that parents can have. The eggs selection must be control too by the government.
In my opinion, the practice of designing babies should be allowed, but not in every context. First, I think that we could eradicate some diseases, and that will be a very good thing (except for the diseases). But I think in parallel that we should let the nature does his work for the physical characteristics. Indeed, if there is some kind of fashion in a state, maybe all the parents will do the same baby, and I don’t expect from my child that he exactly looks like the others.
Then, to my mind, the government will does some legislation and law about it, which doesn’t exist today. Forbidden it could be a very bad idea, because it could create some illegal market, and it certainly will be dangerous.
With that legislation, and a common accord between powerful states, I think the practice of designing babies should be allowed.
And if we are scared about the parent’s comportment (Are they ill-advised ? Crazy ? Have them enough love to give ?), don’t forgive that every day, a lot of child die in the whole world even if they wasn’t designing, just because there is war, famine, poverty, or violent family.
To my mind, designing babies shouldn't be allowed when parents do this in order to make the perfect child. A baby is not a puppet that you can modeling as you wish. If it where allowed without regulation, every rich people would like to make clones, just like they are clones considering there clothes and hairstyle. A baby is not something fashionable. It would create clones, and if a child doesn't like his appearance, how will he react ? "It's your fault if I'm like this so now I want do decide of my appearance" ? Surgeons will be pleased, and intellingence will be buried if you want my opinion. If it were allowed, the world will be composed of dolls and those who won't have money to pay the operation and they will be rejected by idiot dolls.
But, if it were regulate, just in order to avoid deseases, I won't blame anyone to wants to improve his child's life. Besides, I think everyone should have the chance to have an access in cure.

In fact, if a family sink (is that for real? :o) having a design baby is a good idea no one should forbid them to do this because it is not their business and it won't change their own life. To complete this point of wiew, we can consider that their life won't change if that is forbid or no so every one should be more tolerent toward others."

I think that designing babies, on one side, is nice for it allows for avoiding serious illness, even eradicate them totally if this practice is done worldwide. On the other side, designing babies is not a good idea, for the reason that this design would follow the fashion and fashion varies. Eventually designing babies will become a competition to create, with your own mind, the perfect baby. When a new generation come, the previous generation will out of date.
To summarize, it is indeed a good idea to change the gene of a baby to avoid diseases, but it is not to choose the physical of a baby.
Limits must be set to designing babies on an ethical basis. After organising a deep debate on the use of this new technology society can withstand, the government must set a legal framework to designing babies. It must survey this practice and make sure these regulations are enforced. National regulations are not enough in an open world, and the government shall start discussing with other governments for setting up equivalent regulations.

I think designing babies, can't be allowed. In fact, even if the idea of choosing how you're baby is could seem great, in my opinion there's two reason why it can't be done. First, that would be expensive, consequently, rich people would have children who would born with more advantages. Do we want a world were kids from rich families would have more advantages than they already have today ?
The second reason why I disagree with designed babies is that in my opinion, we must respect the natural process of life, which means that we can't modify futur human beings. Why a parent would need to choose what his child would be ? Parents shouldn't love there child as he is and not as they want him to be ? The answer is obvious, and so, we don't need it and for the respect of the natural process we mustn't allowed designed babies.
In my opnion, it would be a good thing to allow it but only for medical cases.
For example, to help parents who have a child with a heavy disease to find a solusion, like to have an other child compatible with the ill one.
Or if the parents have high probability to have a baby with a genetic disease, to enable them to chose the best of their eggs thanks to genetic.
This practice could make the life of families better and mostly for the kid.
Moreover, it would be a benefit for the government because there will be more people who can have a job and less money to spend on structures and financial aids for disabled people.
However,this need to be very control with strict legislations, like parents have to do a psychological test, there will have a background check done and several control visits to families after.
I think we should legalize these practices only in certain difficult situations or when you have no more choice. For example, when life is at stake, as we have seen Katie suffers from a serious disease, then it seems honorable to try everything to save this girl...
But we aren't God, we shouldn't, in my view, touch the genes, or create perfect baby! With all the inequalities in the world, we must maintain a certain free will. If we don't keep it at least, the existence of many people will have no sense, and I'm not even talking about the inequalities that follow between different social classes !
The creation of a child isn't a game, it's a beautiful thing that represents the union of two beings to form a third.
I don't think that one day mankind wants to procreate or choose their own babies, but in any case, should it happen, I really complain child's parents, which itself has nothing to do, but that is his whole existence that is called into question...
I do not think we should allow such practices.
Indeed even if they can afford to save lives such as Katie life, they also have significant bad sides.
For example, Christopher was born only in order to save his sister, and somehow not for him as a person full. His parents bought it to save their child and only him because it is compatible with Katie. This practise can bring big Faintness at Christopher for example.
Furthermore, if we allow this practices, I think it opens access to practice more and more extreme and dangerous, such as the selection of SuperKids. By this practice, we completely eliminates the factor "luck" of our life as our appearance, our hobbies, our passions all that separates us from each other.
Finally, I think we will end up in a society of "clones" even more than today.
I don't think that the practice of designing babies should be allowed because it's an unethical action. Parents will make their child like they want, with their image of the perfect child. We can't consider the baby who will born is theirs. In fact on the paper, this is their genes but they just choose such or such genes by believing to knom what it's better for the child even before he was born. They are just going to draw his fate.
But we can make exeptions for medical case,for example eradicate the genes of an inherited disease.
To my mind we should allow this parctice because it could save a lot of people.
In other words we could accept a designing baby just for medical issues. But this practicing needs laws to control his evolution in the society .
More and more family would have a designing baby, so it could exist some test and control for the family.
This kind of check on the past for example, like it all ready exist for family who wants to adopt a child.
In another view this technic could creat jealousy between the future generations, who will be geneticly modified or not.
But besides the future scientific progress are impressive and that is why it will be indispensable to allow this practice.
I think the governement must allow designed babies in some situations. First, in a family, when a kid is unheathly and a other baby with applicable gene can help to cure the child, that could be a good solution.The doctor can take away cell to trat the patient. If the patient recognize a better health, the family will be very happy.
In addition, if it's a matter of life and death for the baby, in the contexte of emergency, we can mutate the gene of the embryo to eradicate desease or predisposition. In my opinion, at contrary, it's unbearable choose the cell to make up children. It's an eugenic very unsettling as far as ethic point of view is conerned and as a consequence can becomeformidable and overwhelming and out-of-control.

For me the choice to be able to design the babies raises a ethics problem.
At first, I think that in some case it resorts has to exist when there is risk of serious illness, who could engendered problems for the child.
But secondly my opinion is that power to choose the child whom we want to have is not a good thing because to choose the color of the eyes, these hair will bring only harmful problems in all the civilization.
that's the reason, I think that only a doctor can say if he needs it it to minimize the risks that the foetus of danger.
