Cosette by Banksy (Alice)

les miserables cosette banksy londres

Banksy is British and he is the most famous street art artist in the world. In 2016 he created in front of the French embassy in London (in the United Kingdom) a “Cosette” (who is one of the principal characters of the famous novel “les Misérables” by the French author : Victor Hugo 1802-1885).

This ephemeral painting represent Cosette who is crying, behind her a French flag and there is a “strange cloud” under her with a link for smartphone which brings us a video which shows the tear gas in Calais.

This masterpiece convey a message about the migrants in Calais who were asphyxiated by tear gas by the French policemen who were throwing away tear bombs. Around 4.500 refugees were in Calais during this period (with sometimes some children) and they were used to live in terrible condition: we were used to call this site “the Jungle”.  And also they were living in misery...like Cosette.

Some of them hoped to join the United Kingdom to have their family (who were in England) or other wanted to have a better condition because it is more easy for a stranger to have a job in England.

Thanks to his painting, Banksy wanted to give evidence of the condition’s migrants because paintings talk to everyone (if you are a child or a young teenager who know nothing about the news…)

Like Hugo by his talent, he conveys his feeling about the news which are a little like the same than 150 ago. And again like Hugo he is giving a voice for the people who can’t express their feelings in this society.

Exit through the Gift Shop – Banksy (Marie 1L)

This movie was released in 2010 and realized by one of the most famous street artist ever : Banksy. It's a kind of documentary about both the mysterious, illegal and controversial world of Street Art, and a peculiar person called Thierry Guetta (aka « Mr.Brainswash »).

It's really fascinating and interesting because we see the « behind the scene » of an art which surrounds us. An art that can be ephemeral or long lasting; violent, shocking, or on the contrary, stunning and entertaining. It's an art that represents freedom, since it is, first of all, illegal. In fact, this movie also shows the ingenious  and creative ways street artists realize their artworks without being caught. Their art can either conveys a message – that can be controversial, political, etc- or to brighten our urban environment with lively and colorful artworks and using the buildings features.

Moreover, it teaches us than there's way more than simple « gratifies »: stickers, sculptures, murals, and many more are all part of Street Art. It also introduces us to a few famous street artists, such as Invader and Shepard Fairey.

As far as I am concerned, there isn't a single moment when I was bored: it jumped from something funny to something shocking to something moving, etc… This is definitely a must-see which represents perfectly the modern hidden world street art.

Pop Art Exhibition (Laura 1L)

The fifteenth of january, we have seen a exhibition about Pop Art. The exhibition presented us a collection of Whitney Museum of American Art Collection of New York City founded by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney (1875-1942), a american sculptor, art patron and collector. It showed us around sixty paitings, sculptures or prints from the beginning of the sixties to the end of the seventies. There were works of some prominent and Pop Art’s renowed artists such as Roy Lichtenstein and the serigraph Andy Warhol, amongst others.

But, what is Pop Art ?

At the beginning of the 1960s, a generation of artists appears in the United States in reaction to the abstract expressionism which was very appreciated at this time. The Pop Artist denounced the consumer society developed in this decade by representation of everyday objects and the signs of popular culture, in others words, « the American way of life ». This art movement was also characterised by the colours which they used : bright, pure, intense, and contrasting colours associed to the way to work : they represented events or people humorously or ironically to spread the power of the image such as the iconic women Jackie Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe, sometimes in order to celebrate or sometimes to criticise it.

Hope – Shepard Fairey (Marie 1L)

I chose to talk about "Hope", a poster created by Shepard Fairey in honnor of the 2008 presidential campaign. At first sight, we obviously recognize the face of the former president  of the USA Barack Obama, who was only a candidate at that time. The use of this political figure makes this poster a controversial and contemporary work of art. The word “Hope” written below in capital letters is quite symbolical as only one word can represent the possibility of a better future, a more hopeful country. It looks pretty powerful to me because it doesn’t need a sentence to be understood, since one word is enough. Moreover, this spirit of hope is highlighted by the ambitious gaze he gives to the right, right that represents the future.

As far as I am concerned,  I think that it is a quite fascinating artwork because it was reproduced many times in many places without any explanation, so people got used to it without even noticing it. I'm sure even you already saw this. Furthermore, it can be interpreted in many ways: some may find it humorous, others thinks it conveys a real message.
However, I wouldn’t say it is that elaborate because it isn’t very colorful: in fact, there are only three colors which are blue, red and white (probably referring to the USA flag’s colors). Moreover it isn’t creative because Shepard Fairey was inspired by Jim Fitzpatrick's "Che Guevara" poster. Anyway, I find this poster pretty interesting because, everyone is free to understand the way they want.

Vandal by Nick WALKER

WORK OF STREET ART BY NICK WALKER

This work of art was made by Nick Walker, a famous street artist born in 1969 in Bristol in England, in this work of art we can see his famous gentleman which is his trademark that we can see in many of his work. This gentleman appears on many of Walker’s work of art and became an icon of street art, most of the time the gentleman isn’t show and there is just his word “Vandal” and something that he lost in the hurry like a hat, or umbrella. This work is made with red spray cans and stencils because Nick Walker was considered as the master of stencil and a member of the stencil graffiti movement create by Robert Del Naja. Although Nick Walker is an English he made exhibition and work of art in different places like in Paris where he made different work of art but unfortunately the most of his work has been remove because on the contrary of England, there is no legal wall in Paris so it shows how ephemeral street art can be. His work of art shows a gentleman which is the symbol of England and virtue, who are painting on a wall the word “Vandal”. Nick Walker says in an interview that he chooses a gentleman because nobody except a gentleman to do an illegal work. To me the fact that this man is spray painting the word “Vandal” is really sarcastic and ironic because some people consider street art as vandalism so the fact that someone who is vandalizing a wall is writing the word “Vandal” in red, in order to caught the attention of the viewer, is funny and this is why I like this work of street art.

Okuda, reinterpretation of the Joconde (Ines 1L)

San Miguel Okuda is a Spanish street artist who belongs to the movement of pop surrealism, he graduated from fine arts in Madrid which is his current place of living. He has traveled all over the world (India, Russia, France, Portugal, etc) to show his street art which is really unusual I guess, and his commitment.

As I said before, he went to France, precisely in Paris, to produce some works of art such as a reinterpretation of the Joconde in the 13th district. This work of art has been painted on a wall of 50m height and 15m width which was empty at first. It is a really colorful and flashy work of art with geometric shapes which are quite recurrent in Okuda’s art. Unlike the genuine Mona Lisa, we can see the entire body of the woman, she is “wrapped” in different patterns, one of them has stars on it which makes me think of the American flag. She represents a multicultural woman because of all the colors that have been used. Moreover, Okuda and his staff have used about 450 spray cans. At the top of the painting, there is a gradation of blue, green and yellow which is stunning, the sky is sprinkled of stars. She has a bird on her right shoulder that could symbolized freedom. Okuda decided to make her wearing a Louis Vuitton bag because Paris is the capital of fashion, in my opinion, it can also represents the money/capitalist society that we are living in. A the bottom of the painting, there is like a hole or maybe a puddle of colors, it seems to me that she is falling into it.

In my opinion, this is a beautiful work of art, really creative, elaborated and modern, Okuda decided to show his own point of view of the Joconde, he wants to transmit his positive outlook on life. This painting contrasts with the dull colors of the environment and the other buildings, I think that it can brighten people’s horizons and it makes our environment more lively.

A BREACH TO THE EVERYDAY LIFE

This is a hyper realistic graffiti, made by a community of anonymous artists, called the Graffiti Technica. They work for hours in the streets all over the world in order to offer people some blossoming and very creative pieces of art such as this one.

The artists here depicted a huge and dark chasm, looking very deep, and in which can be seen a running waterfall; probably the spring of any underground river. On the photograph, the work of art seems to reach its purpose: it impresses and entertains people, and it amuses them as well. We can see a bike rider, obviously surprised by the painting and posing for the photo on the small wooden plank drawn by the artists to pretend the possible crossing of the abyss.

It appears that there is no specific message conveyed, even though an interpretation of it is imaginable: as a breach in the everyday life, symbolized by the road, and the waterfall being the way to something new.

It can be said that this is street art – hyper realistic one, indeed – for it is a painting exhibited for free in the street, and explicable. Moreover, if the idea passed on is the one I understood, it would be a perfect representation of the essence of street art as a raising against the boring and oppressive routine. I’d say it is a modern and elaborate piece of art, with an attractive aspect. Alas! I am afraid this is an ephemeral work, however very ingenious.

Kikito, the Child over the Mexican border

JR is a French street artist who travels the world to take people’s portrait. Then he makes very big stickers of those faces and hangs it on the buildings. The point is to bear witness, to mark the spot of a life, to spread a message but mostly to pay a tribute to the unknown persons. It’s also makes the buildings more beautiful and our environment more lively. Actually, he draws attention to places that we don’t necessarily see like the favela in Rio. Moreover, I think we see the building in a another way and it makes us think about the message which JR wants to convey.

Finally, unlike the most of the others street artists, he doesn’t make vandalism because we ask him to do his work most of the time.

That was for the street artist, now I will talk about a work of Art in particular. I have chosen the monumental photo of Kikito, a mexican child, which JR have installed on the wall which separate Mexico and the California, in Tecate more precisely, in the U.S. He installed this photo on a ground of a modest family which also accepted that the youngest of the family serve as a model for the black and white photo.

Seen from the American side, the child seems to be inside a crib, getting ready to escape toward something that’s caught his attention. JR has chosen a one-year-child because even the children notice this wall and wanted to cross it like Kikito despite the fact that he doesn’t have a political vision, or any point of view. So, he obviously denounces this wall and the Trump’s decision.

EZK DANS QUEL MONDE VUITTON

EZK is a French street artist, is real name is Eric ZeKing. He is 35 years old and starts make street art when he was in highschool. He is aslo a big fan of the famous street artist Shepard Fairey. So this work of art is call « Dans quel monde Vuitton ? » he made many compositions who denounce poverty and the inequalities by making pun with famous brand like Cartier, Nike, Dior and others. But this one is the most famous. EZK found this idea of slogan after saw a video of the poor people in the world but at the end of the video it was write « this video was present by Vuitton » He thought there was a big gap between the two. I found it on social media one month ago and I think it was really interesting and the pun done reflect and is also very true. Ths is a stencil, he don’t use many colors. Apart from grey, black, white and brown, only simple shades. We can see a black baby who take a « shower » on a metal seal, he looks lost and certainly sad, his gaze is empty. On the seal is inscribed the luxury brand logo of Louis Vuitton everywhere.
