Pop Art, Mel Ramos - Benjamin

Tobacco Rhoda by Mel Ramos, 1965

Mel Ramos is an American painter who represents the movement of the Pop Art. For his works, he often took his wife as a model to superimpose some objects or animals on her body and he also chose other bodies from men magazines like Esquire. In Tobacco Rhoda, the woman sitting on a pack of cigarettes could be interpreted as a commodification of the woman like she was used to sell the cigarettes. Instead of being attracted by this product, the public should be attracted by this woman linked with the cigarettes, she takes most of the space in the painting and she covers a part of the packet with her knee, hiding a part of the mark. Mel Ramos wanted to criticize the publicity at this time, in the sixties, which represented the products constantly with women, vulgarizing their condition. Mel Ramos created a brand-new style in his art by copying the method of the publicity to denounce better. I found this work of art interesting and strong to denounce the publicity which was extremely exaggerated and fictitious. The painting is also flashy, colorful and bright to catch the glance of the public.

EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP (Camille)

This movie, called “Exit through the gift shop” was directed by Banksy. It is a documentary made about Thierry Guetta, a French man obsessed with filming and street art. It tells how Thierry, who is a huge fan of Banksy, came to work him, and how he himself became a renowned street artist, called Mr. Brainwash.

The movie is made up with lot of camera roll pictures of Thierry’s life, that he has filmed for years. Every moment of his everyday life could be found on thousands of tapes; from his home life to his street artist’s helper one. Indeed, his first connection with street art was through an acquaintance of his: the French street artist Space Invaders, who places mosaics in the streets of Paris. He assisted him, looked out in case some police officers would come, and helped him carrying everything he needed.

This is how, taking profit of the influence of his contacts and becoming useful to his friends, he managed to meet some more famous street artists, and eventually reached Banksy himself.

He made himself indispensable to Banksy, who came to consider him as a friend. He was even allowed into Banksy’s own workplace, and the street artist took him with every night he was out. Thierry showed to be a precious and loyal friend; however, his original purpose was to make a movie about street art; which he had to do.

“An endless unwatchable trailer”, according to Banksy who seemed for the first time to tell his true feelings about the whole situation. He instead advised Thierry to try to become a street artist. Flatted by this counsel, the French man launched a massive work to organize a gigantic exhibition. He indebted himself, and had to resell his house; but luckily, the exhibition was a success, and it is with flying colours that he became known as “Mr. Brainwash”.

Pop-art exposition, Robert Rauschenberg

image1.jpeg

This work of art, made by Robert Rauschenberg after the second world war two, is a collage of different pictures and newspaper headlines. This collage can be seen as a messy one but when we look more precisely at the work of art we can see pictures of dead bodies from carnages made by the Nazi system in concentrations camps, moreover there is pictures of lynched bodies and newspaper headline about Mississippi. This work of art is therefore shocking and also touching because it exposes the violence and barbarism that has been done in the past, I choose this work of art because of the powerful message that is transmitted. Robert Rauschenberg is born in 1925 and dead in 2008, is a part of a movement called the Neo-Dada and he is one of the precursor of Pop-Art, he was friend with an artist named CY Twombly which I really like that’s how I heard about him. When we went to the Maillol Museum to see the collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art we saw this work of art and other ones of Robert Rauschenberg which were really interesting too but this one was the most interesting in my point of view, especially because of the yellow, red, black and white colors because the contrast is huge it makes a violent effect on the vision and I think it’s in order to echo the violence of the pictures which are uses.

ZDEY (Chléa 1L)

Today I want to show you one of the most creative artist I know. “Zdey” becomes famous in some months, he is an example of perseverance. Indeed, he started has many street artist with illegal artworks in the street such as defacing mailboxes. Then, he created a little guy in black and white which quickly became his signature as Space Invader for example. To me, his work make our environment less bleak. Personally, I think his art brings colors. For example, he made a great artwork the 27th of October 2017, we can see that he painted on a shutter between two dull walls, so it brighten colors in a place where there is not. However, this art is ephemeral, it can be damaged or even destroyed because of people passing in front of. Along the way, he becomes really famous and his art is not illegal anymore and it is not vandalism at all because some people want him to do their home or much bigger. In fact, before this work of art, a school director called him to do a part of his school. When I went to see it, I was really admirative because it was a big work. This time it was an exhibition and here, it has been the best place to publish his work. So it was and it’s still my favorite work from Zdey.

The street artist covered all the walls of the court while putting references to the book “The Alchemist” from the famous writer Paulo Coelho. To me, it totally conveys a message which is to fight for our objective and to make every effort to reach it. For example he wrote some words like “dream” and “future. However, he made a reference to the movie “Va, vis et deviens” with the sentence “Dream, read and become”. Finally I just understood it like that. To finish, the book the alchemist is very powerful and it is great that a street artist take advantage of his fame to convey some messages. He probably used hundred and more spray cans and free-hand aerosol paints.

I really enjoy his work and if you can follow him on instagram, it could be great.

Pop Art, and the exhibition - Lucie (1L)

At the end of the 1950s, following the two world wars, artists followed a new movement: pop art. In America, although it really became known around 1960 (1958) in New York, pop art is the return to an art that uses worldly reality, irony. If at that time commercials were becoming more popular, American artists would look for them more dramatic topics that would change the perfection shown in the advertisements. On the contrary the British, perform a more romantic, sentimental and humorous work. It was by the "Independent Group" that pop art appeared in London in 1952.

If in France pop art becomes popular in the 2000s, we find a lot in Paris, especially at the Maillol museum. From the 22nd of September to the 21st of January, an exhibition was held in this museum, where remarkable artworks from the Pop Art Movement could be found as paintings, sculptures and prints. this exhibition contains many works criticizing the society of the 20th century, a consumer society, such as the problem of smoking found in Tobacco Rhoda by Mal Ramos for example or with the work of Claes Oldenburg, Giant Fagends. If the works of art presented to us are very original, an explanation of the works allows us to better understand the context. What is interesting is the different artistic styles that are proposed to us, the watercolor at May Stevens with Triple Daddy blue, the silkscreen in Tobacco Rhoda, or the sculpture with Giant Fagends. Personally, I found this exhibition very entertaining and interesting. At first sight a lot of them, may shock, some may even find them inadequate, for me it's an original way to convey a message through art. As far as I am concerned, I think that the artists of this exhibition are great, because of their modern style and their creative work. That is why this exhibition seem to me very interesting, it is at the same time original and interesting but the artists are also trying to convey a message.

I don’t believe in global warming - Lucie (1L)

I chose a work by Banksy. He painted it in 2009, in London and more specifically in Camden. Banksy did not use stencil, he simply wrote to the painting his message, which is « I don’t believe in global warming » on the wall a building. His text is located at the bottom of the building, at the water level. The bottom of the message is difficult to read. He also uses irony, and denounces those who minimize the impact of global warming on the rising waters. To me it looks original because it is a little humorous, indeed the message is on the verge of being completely flooded with water. Personally, I have the feeling that this work of art convey an interesting message, especially because of the red and capital lettering which represents a call for help. I am convinced that this entertaining work of art will create the reflection in passers-by, it makes people aware that global warming is something which is important.  In fact, people are used to speak about sports, or politic, but I find it strange that people don't talk about Tsunami, earthquake, ice melting. Here, he mentions an important problem: global warming, and the impact on the world. And I think it's awesome that a well-known artist is interested in these kinds of problems, because he has an influence on the population, and his audience is interested in these works, and therefore in the messages he conveys. That’s why I find this work very beautiful, because of the irony that it releases but also by the massage of Banksy.
