The Avengers is a movie that tells the story of Nick Fury , director of S.H.I.E.L.D (the organization that preserves peace worldwide) that seeks to form a strong Superheroes team to prevent the world's destruction. Iron Man, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Captain America and Hulk are here to protect the world and join Nick Fury.Even if the Avengers is the most powerful and the most fantastic team, the heroes still have to learn to work together , not against each other , especially as the dreaded Loki was able to access the unlimited power of the Tesseract, a powerful cosmic cube that was lost at the bottom of a lake at the end of Captain America.

In the Marvel Universe that counts more than 500 comics, after half a century of work, the scenarsitic basis is humongous, and choosing the raw material to develop a scenario must have been very difficult. Hopefully, the director managed to benefit the cinematographic universe to fit and pleasure both Comics fans and Marvel movies fans, and that's what makes this movie complex, worked and beautiful.

The major positive point about this movie is a thoroughly wonderful, worked and thrilling script with dialogues and even some fun within. Furthermore, unlike in some recent movies, the action sequences are really well modulated, controlled and paced by Whedon : even if it’s epic and intense, with explosions and fire everywhere, it’s never “too much”. The final battle for example, where all the Superheroes gather to fight against Loki’s minions, is full of action and it doesn’t lose to all the action movies until now: it’s even better than all the Marvel movies action scenes together.

I was astonished by the breathtaking visual effects, like in the final scene (again) where the streets of Manhattan are the theater of an incredible fight, with phenomenal stuns and also irresistible special effects : it's been made so realistic that you can't imagine all of this was encrusted in a green screen.

Now the negative points, the major one is obviously that to understand the story, you must have seen pretty much all of the previous Marvel movies, and there are even some false connections. For example, the director John Whedon forgot that at the end of Thor, this character was trapped in Asgard and was dreaming to meet again with his scientist girl Jane yet here, he is able to come back to earth very easily and doesn’t even bother to meet Jane when he was told she was moved 6 states away for her safety. Some negative reviews also compared Loki’s minions to Transformers, saying “apparently, bootleg copies of Transformers 3 made it to Asgard”.

The music is also a negative point : when you learn Alan Silvestri composed the soundtrack, you have incredible expectations but the soundtrack isn't overwhelming. The music is, when needed, impressive and propulsive or dramatic however, on the other hand, the main them in the closing credits (for example) feels underwhelming, it lacks inspiration and exploration and it's not as memorable as expected from Silvestri : when you're watching a movie as great and impressive as this one, you don't need good music, you need tremendous music with a lot of intensity variations and arousing and ground-breaking themes, and this soundtrack, alas, wasn't always generous enough.

The Avengers is perfectly balanced between all the characters, it doesn’t focus on a peculiar character or a duo: everyone is getting at least one solo action sequence and a very human side whether it’s about their present, their family, or their past. Hulk fears his own power that grows because of this fear and angriness, Captain America, who was frozen in the past, is trying to fit and understand the modern world, Thor is feeling responsible and guilty for what Loki, his brother, is doing, and Iron Man has a huge ego and is voluntarily “lonely” : he’s single minded. Even uncommon to meet characters that were starting to be forgotten, like the Black Widow and Hawkeye, are brought back with a past and story that gives the beginning of an understanding of their personality, even if I was disappointed by the fact the story between Bruce Banner and the Black Widow didn’t go really far. I finally was disappointed that Nick Fury (played by Samuel L. Jackson) is left behind the other superheroes: they wear iron armors, horned helmets, turn green to fight, have an invincible shield and he only wears an eye patch, and doesn't even fight a lot.

To conclude, I would say this movie, even if it has some negative points, is a thrilling blend between the Marvel Universe and the genius direction of John Whedon that will transport you with an intense and exciting atmoshpere. Marvel's The Avengers truly is at the pinnacle of the 7th art , and it deserves at least 4.5 out of 5 stars.
