I remember visiting the Tate Modern when I first went to London. I was genuinely stunned by its beauty and size. It was in 2014 and it was a school trip. I think it used to be a factory and I found it amazing, the way they redecorated the place and were able to turn an old abandoned factory into something modern, original and lively. The exhibitions mostly deal with contemporary art, it was great to admire famous works of art by notorious painters. The most striking one to my mind was definitely Paul Klee's painting, ‘Walpurgisnacht’. At first, I couldn't figure out what it was but after a while staring at it I could figure out that the dark colors represented the night. It reminded me of the series Games of thrones and its various dark settings.

As a street art piece of work I’ve chosen the elephant-octopus, I don't really know who painted it. It's a mural in Shoreditch where we can see an elephant, it's a bit strange because it has numerous trunks which makes it -in my opinion- an elephant-octopus. It doesn't really convey a social message, it's more of an amusing painting. The elephant-octopus seems to be underwater because the background is blue. The artist must have used a stencil because it's very precise and detailed. I would say it's a rather funny and interesting painting. Mostly because it makes me wonder why the artist chose to mix those two animals but then I think it's not really supposed to make much sense. It's a bit frightening because it's a large work of art, and the octopus isn't a very appealing animal, mostly because of the way it looks. I have to say I wouldn't be comfy around one. The street artist made an interesting choice which I found attractive and modern although it surprised me when I first saw it.

I'd love to live in London because of the special atmosphere there. It's just so reinvigorating and soothing. I love how people feel free to dress anyway they want. I just feel like people do not fear judgment and feel confident about their fashion choices, I think there is a different energy.
The weather isn't so bad, I don't think it's that different from Paris, it's true that London streets don't look like the Paris one's but they have their own charm.
Turns out I also love shopping, London is the perfect place for that! Moreover, I'm also a huge fan of pubs, I've never been to one but let's say I enjoy the concept. As soon as I go back there, I'll try one out (I'll drink tea of course, British obligations).
I think I'm fond of everything London represents, I would like to study there, or near London at least so that I can try to live a British life for a while, I'd also be closer to my brother who lives on the east side of London. He's my age (complicated blended family), and we talk very often but we don't get to see each other more than twice a year! I'm sure he knows every 'hype' and trendy place there since he's always hanging outside with his lads. I can't wait to go back to London!

Today, I want to talk about the Australian artist James Cochran, aka Jimmy C, born on the 4th of June 1973 in England. He is known for his urban narrative paintings and for his drip painting style.

When we were in London, we could admire many interesting pieces of street art, but the one that most marked me was « Joe's Kid » by Jimmy C, it is situated on Brick Lane. It was the last work that we saw during the visit of London streets. The guide told us the story about this piece, which made the work even touching and warm. This is a portrait of the owner of the cafe, on where this work of art has been painted, when she was aged 3 with her grandfather Joe, who owned a cafe in London’s East End during the 1930s. Now the girl in the portrait carries on the tradition with her cafe, aptly named Joe’s Kid. Stunning work and great to see the first portrait by Jimmy C in London. It was made in 2015.

James Cochran seems to be a very mysterious artist... I searched for informations about him on the internet but unfortunately, I didn't find any picture of him. I still post the picture of his work, taken by me on Brick Lane:

I have chosen this work of art because I really appreciate this type of modern art and maybe because it illustrates my vision of art and how I can symbolize my vision of art. I find it really modern and interesting because when I see this painting, I try to identify some elements that can be depicted in the painting. I realize that there are so many different ways to interpret this kind of painting. I can see a landscape, or a cityscape, a boat, I can identify some animals like horses, fish and this is what I like in a work of art: you can interpret what YOU see, you and only you. It is as if there was this painting and it’s my role to imagine a story too, to be able to tell my own version of the story of this painting. For me, painters who can paint works of art like that have understood everything about what art is. It is an original way to paint, it is ingenious, it can be strange for some people but for me, this is a perfect work of art.

Aphrodite of Milos by Nathan

I have chosen the Aphrodite of Milos (La Venus de Milo) which is to be seen in a famous museum in Paris the Louvres museum.

I have chosen this sculpture because it’s THE most famous one to my mind. We don’t know exactly who the sculptor was but people think that it’s Alexandros of Antioche. At first sight we could think that it is a violent or a shocking work of art because the sculpture has no arms.

Her arms were broken many years ago. When you see this sculpture it looks disturbing but when you look carefully at it it’s wonderful ! Each detail is a tour de force, a masterpiece. I remember when I saw it I was really fascinated by all de details.

WHAT IS STREET ART FOR ME? BY NOLWENN

WHAT IS STREET ART FOR ME?

Street art is when an artist exhibits or displays his works of art in the street, and all of us can see them. Most of the time, they paint on a wall, on buildings or houses,  which is illegal. They paint in the street in order to have more impact on people or just to force people to see what they have done or what they want us to understand. I think when you are an artist or more specifically a street artist, you are a rebel. I mean, you paint illegally in various spaces, you denounce a specific subject etc.. But that’s kind of cool I think ! In general, we call those graffiti « tags ». We can see some in the underground or on big walls.

I love this kind of art because I think it’s really original even if it has existed for thousands of years, this new trend’s growing really fast and in very different forms every year.

Art goes viral

From GOOD MAGAZINE: An article by Yasha Wallin

February 4th 2013

In Syria, more than 50,000 people have been killed since protests against President Bashar al-Assad’s regime erupted in March 2011. In response to the devastation in his country, Damascus-born artist Tammam Azzam has  created the body of work, Syrian Museum, which originally showed at Ayyam Gallery in Dubai. His latest image    that explores the ongoing conflict is an incredible reimagining of “The Kiss” by Gustav Klimt, superimposed onto a war-torn building. Klimt’s masterpiece, which lays on top of a crumbling edifice riddled with bullet holes, reveals the country’s struggle  between beauty and destruction, as people cope with a civil war that shows no signs of ending.

Azzam’s image clearly resonates around the world: it was ‘liked’ by over 20,000 people and shared 14,000 times in the 5 hours it was put out through social media. Azzam, who fled Syria for fear of being called up for reservist army duty, has been commenting on the plight of his people through his artwork, which often  juxtaposes popular works of art over images of bombed out Syrian cities. The artist’s powerful works give the hopeful feeling that beauty will win out, if we keep talking—either literally or visually—about what is happening in the region.
