The invitation
A widower was spending his first Chrsitmas alone after losing his wife. A neighbor helped him through the season by inviting him to share their celebrations or by doing a special favor for him.
Jack: the widower (main character)
Kate Delfino: his neighbor
Jude: his wife
One week ago, Jack went to the supermarket as every year on Christmas morning to buy the chocolates his two children enjoyed. When he reached the street from his house, he saw his neighbor carrying several races he ran with her to help her carry his bags:
" - Thank you very much, you're very kind Mr.Burkley. Would you like me to invite you to share a small Christmas dinner with me next week?
- I will send my answer by then, thank you for your proposal."
Jack accepted the invitation of Mrs. Delfino and went to his front door. When was about to ring the doorbell, she suddenly opened the door as if she knew it had happened. Jack was taken aback, and entered the house. The house seemed very cold.
While the widower remained very quiet, Mrs. Delfino came with a cup of tea:
"- I am allowed to give you something to warm up with snacks.
- Thank you.
- You can call me Kate
- Can I ask you a question?
- Of course
- Why did you offer me to join you ? Do you have no family with whom you could share this evening, usually where families gather around a good dinner?
- I have no family, my husband disappeared last year and the police never found. I think that he is ... dead.
- I'm so sorry, I understand what you are feeling. My wife died on Christmas night in a car accident and since the authorities withdrew mcustody of my two children. It has now been 5 years ...
Since that day I have hated Christmas day and all the traditions."
A tear ran down on Kate's cheek, Jake took her hand and comforted her. Jake took her hand and comforted. He remained like that for a few minutes, then suddenly Kate removed his hand.
They began to eat dinner that Kate had taken time to prepare, and told many stories of Christmas. Then their conversation led them to talk about Jude, the Jake's wife:
"- Your woman had very lucky to have you with her, you're a good person.
- That's nice, I would like so much if she is present with us tonight.
- Can I ask you a favor?
- Of course
- Can you ask Santa to let you see again your wife before midnight?
Jake laughed.
- Are you kidding? Without wanting to offend you, I think you read too wonderful tales. This is totally impossible and you know, because my wife is dead and will not return. So thank you for this dinner but I think I'll go.
- Please, do it for me, anyway you have nothing to lose.
- Goodbye Mrs. Delfino"
Upon returning home, Jake thought about what Kate had said, he found that for absolutely ridiculous. He caught sight of a box greeting to the front door of his house. Jake made a wish and asked Father Christmas that he can see his wife before midnight as he had asked Kate. It was already 8:30 p.m., but received no sign of his wife. Jake then said that his neighbor was a liar. He then went to bed and slept peacefully widower.
Suddenly he heard a noise coming from the living room, Jake suddenly awoke and went downstairs quickly. When he entered the room, he saw his wife Jude, sitting on the couch. Jake was very surprised and shocked, he began to cry and took his wife into his arms. He looked at the clock and saw that it was exactly 11:30 p.m. Jake and his wife then spent the most magical 30 minutes of their lives. After the two lovers said goodbye, Jude disappeared leaving no traces behind her as if she was never coming.
Since that day, the widower thought again in the magic of Christmas and kept the box carefully which he used every year on the evening of Christmas and managed to have custody of her two children. However Kate Delfino had disappeared without a trace ... But who was she really?
