Sigmund Freud was an Austrian doctor. He founded psychoanalys and his ideas were spred in Europe and to United States of America with severals personalities. Many artists was influenced by this notion.

Early modernism : Nineteen- twenty century.

Ben Shahn was a Lithuanian painter, teacher and photograph naturalized American. His work is caracteristic of his politicals thoughts.

Thomas Cole was an American artist of nineteen century. He was influenced by Naturalism and Romanticism with landscapes.

Edward Hopper was a American painter and burner. He was considered as the representative of Naturalism beacause he painted daily life scenes.

John Sloan was a American painter and ilustrator. He was influence by European artists as Van Gogh or Picasso.

Ben Shahn, Passion of Sacco and Vanzetti, 1931-1932.In the forground, we can see three

mans wearing a black suit for two men and a black dawn for the man at the middle. They wearing too, a hat. There are two coffins with a man in his own coffin. They have eyes closed. In the background, there is a building with a drawing. It's maybe a church. Men have a lost and sad view. It's probably funerals. Two men have a white flower. Actually, this painting represents Saco and Vanzetti, two Italian and American anarchists unjustly accused to homicide and steal. They are symbols of fiercely climate of the time. To my mind, when i see this painting it's sad by expressions of characters but a little bit comic because men are represented with a deformed face.

Thomas Cole, Expulsion, moon and firelight, 1898. In the foreground, we can see a rock mountain with a opening, others rocks and branches. In the background, there are a moon, mountains, a waterfall and a cloud of firelight. There is a play of light shade. The opening of rock mountain is lighted. We can say that it's a united between light and dark because moon is between a dark part too. A united between hope and hopeless. However, the waterfall in the middle show maybe that this union is fragile. This painting makes me feel sad and hopeless because the dark part is more important.

Edward Hopper, Automate, 1927. We can see in this painting, a woman seats on a chair wearing to a yellow hat and a green coat. She takes a cup, maybe a cup of tea or coffee. She is in a bar or restaurant. Behind her, there is a bucket of fruits. We can see, through the window or mirror, lights up. This woman looks sad  and unhappy because she has a down view and a face whitout expression. We found the notion of loneliness to Hopper represented by women who are light for the highlight. The fact that this woman is in a bar shows the loneliness with the dark window, the bucket of fruits and the empty chair before her. When i see this painting, i feel that this woman is vulnerable and that this scene is real.

John Sloan, Sunday, woman drying their hair, 1902. In the forground, we can see three women who keep hair. Two women are seats and one woman is standing and drying laudry.  In the background, we can see buildings. This women are in a terrace and looks happy maybe because it's sunday and that between her. We can say that an retrospection effect because women wearing white clothes and as say the title, they drying their hair, it's as laudry. I personnaly think that maybe a message for women : they must be pretty but also take care of house. It's a daily life scene.

I choose this trand because through this movement, i would represent different message to early modernist. Moreover, to my mind it's difficult to represent reality in painting and i love difficulty. To conclude, when i see this paintings, i feel to be in this scenes, the work of artists is perfect and wonderful. However, i think that the early modernist has a hopeless view and it may unoriginal.
