Art, painters and a lot of creativity. That's the point of our third project, Art for Art's Sake. And this time, I will introduce you to Early modernism, the beginning of Modernism, a new era for Art which is represented by a lot of well-known painters such as Hopper and O'Keeffe. I will focus on those ones only.

As I said, Early Modernism, is the first art movement of Modernism, it's a way of thinking, which needs creativity. Painters left their former way of painting and searched for something new, something where they can express THEMSELVES (mostly because of WWI and WWII). Here comes the early modernists, the pioneers.

We'll start this ehibition with Blue and Green Music by Georgia O'Keeffe (1921)

Blue green music - 1921 - O'keeffe

We can see a colour palette of blue and green, as the title indicates, mixed with yellow, white and black. There's waves on the bottom left side and in the centre of the painting, surrounded by straight lines of dark blue, olive green, and turquoise which surround those waves. I think that the waves represents some crescendo and decrescendo in the music, so the music from the bottom left would be fast, like the most lively part of an orchestra playing, and the waves of the centre would be the slow part. We can also see darker parts in those waves, like in the up right side or on the bottom, so it can be the mysterious/suspense part of the music. Georgia may be describing a musical play, with its most lively and slower parts, the dark would also be the saddest moments and the white/light blue would be the brightest/happiest ones.

Now, let's move on to Ewdard Hopper's Chair Car (1965)

Chair Car

We can see a room, which is supposed to be inside a Car, with passengers and chairs. There's a lot of green, yellow and blue. The yellow may stands for a sunset or an afternoon (because the shadows seem bigger, like when the sun start to go down). The chairs are good, the seem comfortable and not like the poor ones that we can have inside a bus/car in real life. We can see that the people are complaining in their own world without taking part of the reality, they lock themselves up and don't even try to live with the others, it looks like the real life, because people trends to be like this, We can see a woman, reading a book, she may be escaping life by entering in a whole new world : the book's one. The other woman seems to look at her, she may want to talk/meet the other woman, or she tries to escape to life by staring at this woman. So it would be a Mise En Abîme. There's two men in the back, the left one is looking outside, and the others one seems to do the same as the woman n°2. In a way it's a repetition with male characters. The room is sober and boring, there's nothing interesting, nothing eccentric which stand out the normal life. So this painting trends shows how our everyday life really looks like. A boring and insipid portrait.
