Built in Maiden Lane (now Park Street) in 1599 by William Shakespeare's theatre company in London, the Globe Theatre seated 3,000 and was 3 stories high. It burned in 1613 when a cannon shot during a performance of Shakespeare's Henry VIII and the fire spread quickly because the roof was thachted.
Thanks to Wiliam Shakespeare,  the Globe became the most famous theatre in England. A new Globe was used from 1614 to 1642, but the Puritans (led by Oliver Cromwell) closed it down as part of a "morality" campaign. A modern reconstruction of the Globe, named "Shakespeare Globe" opened in 1997 next to the site of the original theatre.
It's an Elisabethan theatre and was designed by an architect called Peter Street.
