In 1841, Solomon Nurthup, a free African-American violonist lived with his wife and two children in New-York until he got kidnapped by two men. These men stole his identity, sold and delivered him to a slave pen. Later, he arrived in New-Orleans and a slave trader named him «Platt». Then he worked for many owners, kind or not, in cotton fields or builting many chalets.

After a hard trip in boat, Nurthup arrives in New-Orleans. He was bought by a kind preacher named William Ford. The slave and his master developped a strong simpathy for each other. One day, a fight happened between Nurthup and an other plantation worker. To save Nurthup, Ford had to sell him to another slave owner, Edwin Epps. This new owner is totally diffrent : he was a paranoid, sadist, violent and didn't hesitate to beat his slaves and rape some of women. Nurthup, with an enslaved woman named Patsey, tried to survived and support each other .

Positif Thing: Twelve years a slave shows in details the dark and deeply the reality of what happened in the period drama history. Even if you're not a faint of heart, you'll be touch by the violence and the sad athmospher and have thrill. The visual effects are spectacular when the slaves are beaten, when they bleed and when then they have scars. You will be empressed by that. The cast is wonderful and very convinsing. At the end you have to hate some of them ! The soudtrack of the flim, composed by Hans Zimmer is swift and great. Many singer wrote songs for the movie like Alicia Keys. Twelve years a slave recieved a lot of reward.... And it's understable !

Negatif Things: To mind opinion, If you are afraid by blood, don't watch it! The movie can, sometime, be a little bit long but it's the only thing you can notice. Otherwise, it's great !

This is Solomon Nurthup, the principal character. He got kidnapped and enslaved for 12 years for many owner . Through him, you can see the pain of a slave. He is kind, determinate and brave.
William Ford, the kind owner and preache. He does everything to treat  his slave as well.

Edwin Epps, sadist and paranoid owner. He is disrespectful and you will hate him
Patsey, a woman enslaved and Solomon's friend. Her story is deeply sad and she is also a scapegoat.

To my mind, this movie is very touching, wonderful and powerful. It shows the reality of this period drama which is so unfortunate. Your view of the slavery change. I reackon that movie and i give a 4,5 stars rating out of 5.
