Hi everyone !
We had to write down a news report on the evolution of family structure. I chose to talk about gay couples.
So here it is :
DO GAY COUPLES' LIVES RHYME WITH STRUGGLE ?
Isaac Kelly, the president of Augusta Pride Inc., shouts while
holding hands with his partner at the gay pride parade of 2015 in Augusta.
"When all Americans are treated as equal, no matter who they are or whom they love, we are all more free." - U.S. President Barack Obama
Lana Smith for the Washington Post, October 26th, Augusta, Georgia :
My name is Lana Smith and the topic of the day is about gay couples in the USA. I interviewed Mark Regnerus, a sociologist who made a study about gay couples and he told us everything we wanted to know about it.
In the late 20th century values got redefined and new family structures emerged : single parenthood, blended families, divorced parents... And of course, gay couples, insofar as two persons of the same sex can make up a family. Indeed, according to Mark Regnerus : "63% of those surveyed consider single-sex couples with children as families." Although a majority of people think that they are bad for society, they view them as genuine famillies
Moreover, today is Monday, October 26th. It has been 3 months since same-sex marriage was legalized by the Supreme Court in all the United States. Nevertheless, we know that several states used to forbid this union. Same-sex marriage is such a chance, in that gay couples' rights used to be restricted. However, they HABE the right to be who they are, and to love who they want insofar as we are all humans with the same feelings. As a consequence, June 26th marked an evolution for society : accepting this new family pattern, which most people do accept, is undoubtedly a sign of open-mindedness.
Similarly, even if conservative views on family structure were superseded by more liberal views, single-sex couples are not always treated rightly. They can be discriminated against, insulted and rejected. The way they are treated can also trigger off an impact on their children's lives.
Yes, a single-sex couple can have children, by adopting, or by insemination or even thanks to surrogate mother. It is very complicated for a gay couple to have children. Then, according to Mark Regnerus once again : "About 45% of homosexual women and 36% of homosexual men deeply want to have children. They have to deal with their sexual orientation which can be a daily struggle sometimes, and also their intense desire to have offspring that may not be fulfilled."
Consequently, gay couples' children might feel different if they have two mothers or two fathers, instead of having a mother and a father, who are married (this is the most common family, the "traditional" one). These children might suffer from what they perceive as a difference. The children of same-sex parents are more likely to be bullied and treated as different, while they have done nothing wrong and they are not more different from another kid.
Finally, each kind of family ought to be accepted in the society. Being open-minded is free and it does not take so long to accept the people around us, we are all equal.

I worked hard on my news report and I have a good mark! That's very cool :) Here is my news report on single parents family:
BEING A SIGNLE PARENT, NOT EASY!
Elena Gilbert for The New York Times. Lansing, Michigan: May 29th. My name is Elena Gilbert and the new topic of the day is single parenthood. Marie-Thérèse will tell us everything we want to know especially why there has been an increasing in single parenthood.
Over the last century, male-dominated societies have been challenged and women have become emancipated, financially & sexually. As a consequence, values have been redefined and new family structures have emerged like single parenthood.
It's in the 1970's that the concept of single parenthood appeared. Nowadays, single parenthood is on the rise. Indeed, single parent families are 45 more common than 40 years ago and concern one in five households. In 85% of cases, the mother heads the family and in one in two case she doesn't have a full-time job. As a consequence, there is a high risk of poverty and a social insecurity. Nonetheless, single parenthood is more & more numerous and various. Marie-Thérèse, a professor of sociology says: "Since the 60s, the part of widow and widowers in single parent families has been decreasing to benefit of separated or divorced parents." Indeed, people used to be leave alone after the death of the husband or wife in three in four cases. Now, three in four cases are separated or divorced parents. However, children become faster self-reliant and do the household chores to help their mother or father. They learn not to be dependent on a husband/wife because they can be alone at any time. Moreover, in the case where the mother heads the family, mothers are younger & younger. As a consequence, several have low graduation and can't have a well-paid job: "I don't think I realized how stressed I was, being a single parent. It was really, really stressful. It's not easy on anybody." by Reese Witherspoon
Finally, as divorce laws became less strict, the number of mariages ending in divorce greatly increased, along with the number of single parents. Another consequence is also the jump in remariages and thus in blended families.
