Here's the long-awaited result to the September pic of the month !

This image comes from the article “Sailing Maori Journey, New Zealanders Rekindle Indigenous Pride”, The New York Times, April 30th 2018.

The original caption reads:

The haka powhiri, a chant and dance of welcome.

The article begins:

Centuries before the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman and Britain’s Captain James Cook arrived in what became New Zealand, there was Kupe, a 10th-century navigator from Tahiti.

The first Polynesian to reach the then-uninhabited island, Kupe and his wife, Kuramarotini, are said by Maori to have given New Zealand its Maori moniker*, Aotearoa, or “land of the long white cloud.”

A long time later — this past February — a group of sailors recreated Kupe’s journey, steering the double-hulled canoes known as waka hourua in New Zealand’s indigenous Maori language. The waka, whose crews included a group of teenagers from Maori language schools, were billed as the main attraction in the opening night of the New Zealand Festival, a three-week arts and culture event that began last month and runs through March 18.

… In previous generations, Maori were discouraged from speaking their indigenous tongue at school, and efforts to revive it in the past few decades have sprung up out of fears that the language would die out.

The significance of the mass haka was not lost on some of the teenagers performing it, who said they keenly followed public debates over whether Maori, an official language of New Zealand, was worth preserving.

I can see some students who stick out their tongue and who are holding perches.
They look like crazy !

Personnaly I see a sort of student demonstration in front of a building (on the last plan). They seem quiet agitated and euphoric. Some of them are holding some strange sticks maybe traditional; and other are sticking their tongue: maybe are they From New Zealand. Is it related to a victory for the New Zealander students ?

We can see young people who make funny face. When I look at them they look like the native of the pacific. The boy wearing a red shirt on the left makes a grimace with his tongue, that reminds me of the All black (rugby team of New Zealand). Also, these schoolchildren are watching people in front of them so i think than it’s a battle between school or team and perhaps it's a tradition of this people.

Hi! I just googled this blog and saw the “picture of the month”. After a quick look,I’d say that there’s lots of people, all crowded together ( probably about 16 years old ) who seem to be having fun! I think a big part of them are screaming of excitement. The teenagers are dressed like in the Harry Potter movies, with a cape , a polo and a tie. They all seem to be holding something that looks quite a bit like a broom in their hands, that was one of the clue (I think)that helped me guess what this photo was about. Was this picture taken because the first movie of the Harry Potter saga has been restored and will be back in our movie theaters in less than a week ? ‘Cause I recently heard about something like that on the news. Anyway, thanks for checkin’ my post !

Hello, I think that these young people are participating to demonstration because they seem to defend an important cause because of their posture.

I think that this picture seems to show two different groups of students who came too support their team to what appears to be a school competition. I can see some uniforms and a lot of craze.

Hey, I think this picture shows some yung student who support a sport lick maybe quidditch which is the Harry Potter’s sport. Hope I’m right...

I think this picture shows a demonstration of young students from the saga of Harry Potter.
We can see 2 distinct camps with, on one side, the reds and on the other, the greens.
Maybe for a competition ...

Hi,
I think this picture represents students wearing their uniforms and supporting a sport. There are green uniforms on one side and red uniforms on the other. So they probably support two different teams.

Hello! From my point of view, this picture shows us a group of high school students who probably comes from an English-speaking country like Ireland or New Zealand. They have come together for a particular cause that seems to be close to their hearts. They all have the same green uniform except two people who are dressed in red. These young people are on the one hand, as if they were winning a competition. We can see it with their eyes, their tongues drawn, and their arms extended, but on the other hand they are also signs that can show a determination, as if they were demonstrating. They seem united and involved in their approach. Maybe they are gathered to give their opinion on a law that concerns young people or high school, however they do not have a sign or microphone which can lead us to believe that they are immersed in a rugby match or volleyball.

Hello,
We can say here that this is a gathering of students because they wear an uniform and are all relatively young. I think they are gathered to defend a cause, an idea. They look like to form a camp against another one. They seem happy with the situation. We can see it by their eyes, including those of the girl on the far right, their posture, their determination. We can suppose that they are mobilizing against a reform in connection with their school. Even their competitive spirit leads us to believe that they are supporting the sport’s team of their school.

Hello Miss,
First of all, we can see a lot of students probably highschool or university.We can see Two differents groups:those dressed in red and those in black and blue uniforms.
Seeing this picture, i have the impression that students are revolted because we can see they have sticks that they raise determined.
We can see also think that they come to defend their teams during a sport competition because it makes me think of the scene in the mobie Harry Potter where gryffondor and serpentard clash in a quidditch match.

Hi guys,

For the pic of the month, we can see a demonstration which we can see young people. They are determined and are doing grimaces because they maybe want to defend a cause or they maybe are watching a match. I guess they are students because they are wearing uniforms of differents colors which we can see the logo of the school. Students are holding something like sticks.

I think those students are manifestating but idk for what.These are students from New Zealand. and from the logo on their uniforms, and after doing some researches, I can say that these students come from a Maori language immersion school. Where philosophy and practice reflect Maori cultural values in the world. purpose of revitalizing Maori language, knowledge and culture

One this picture we can see a lot of people dressed in uniforms. We can presume that they are students. Their faces are aggressive, with their tongue outside their mouths, tight fists, abrupt movement. The way that their mouth opens seems like their screaming or yelling a sound but not words. Their body posture reminds me of the ritual dance of the native people of New Zealand, the Maori. A dance performed to scare enemies, or during demonstration. A famous dance because nowaday, this ritual is part of the Australian culture. Now, if you're looking close to the faces, we can see the physical characteristic of indigenous people like the tanned skin, dark hair etc.. To conclude we can think that this picture was taken during a student demonstration for the rights of indigenous people in school.

This picture represents students wearing green, red and black uniforms. They are screaming very loudly. They seem to manifest, maybe they strggle against an important cause
