How Much Does Halloween Cost Us?

A look at how much Americans spend on Halloween and where that money is going

OCTOBER 29, 2015
SCOTT OLSON—GETTY IMAGSE

How much money will Americans spend on Halloween this year? If you guessed $7 billion, you’re (probably) right. That’s a lot of candy, but it’s actually a little less than the amount we spent on All Hallow’s Eve last year.

Scary, right?

According to the National Retail Federation, last year’s spending was $77.52 per person. This year it is expected to drop to $74.34 per person.

You might be surprised to learn that most of that money goes toward costumes for adults, not kids. Americans will likely dish out millions of dollars for pet costumes, too. Candy will run about $2.1 billion overall.

In the unlikely event that you have leftover treats, there’s a sweet option for you. Many dentist offices across the country participate in the Halloween Candy Buy Back program, in which they buy back extra candy and send it in care packages to troops overseas. If the candy doesn’t leave you smiling, your good deed should!

A reply from Teresa in South Louis!

“Glad you all like the postcard I sent. Wanted it to be something special for you all to learn about. There is so much to learn in the world even at my age (I seem really OLD to you all) I still learn something new everyday my personal goal in life.

Hope you all enjoy postcrossing as much as I do. Always remember you CAN do anything YOU set YOUR mind to. Study a lot and much success to you all in your future.

Teresa (T2S) which stands for Teresa to the south....My last move.”
