<p align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; ">Sixième volume d’une collection destinée aux enseignants du secondaire et à leurs élèves, mais aussi au grand public, cet ouvrage paraît sous un titre qui peut être trompeur : il y est peu question, en effet, des dilemmes de la décision ou des incertitudes de l’action dans le champ moral ou politique mais bien plutôt du bonheur de l’individu, ce que se propose l’auteur étant de nous aider à atteindre à plus de bonheur en prenant conseil auprès de la pensée d’Aristote. Le titre retenu se justifie néanmoins dans la mesure où une des idées les plus saillantes de l’ouvrage est que le bonheur réside avant tout dans le plaisir d’exercer une activité, d’agir donc, mais dans un sens très large, qui n’implique nullement de changer le monde.</p>

Aristotle’s ethical works in order to understand the domain of contingent and
relative human action. The essay falls into four parts: it first expounds the diagnostic
factors preventing human beings from finding happiness in their lives; it then
exposes that virtue (excellence of character) consists in performing moral
actions according to everyone’s skills. In the last two parts it shows how
ethical virtue operates as an intermediate activity between excessive passions
and vicious deficiency, enabling us to develop proper moral habits.</p>

aussi heureux que nous pourrions l’être et de chercher pourquoi.
Le problème, selon l’auteur et selon Aristote, viendrait non pas
d’une faille de notre pensée mais des défauts de nos désirs :
victimes de notre intempérance, qui alimente une insatisfaction
perpétuellement renouvelée, nous désirons le plaisir pour
lui-même, et en particulier le plaisir le plus grossier et le plus
passif, ce qui va apparaître comme la manière la plus sûre de
manquer le vrai plaisir.</p>

la deuxième partie<strong> (« Les
clefs pour comprendre »),</strong>
il s’agit d’ouvrir la voie d’une solution.

la tracer, il faut distinguer les plaisirs qui s’adjoignent à
notre vie sans en procéder et ceux qui émanent de cette vie même,
c’est-à-dire des différentes activités en lesquelles se décline
notre vie : au lieu de « vivre <em>pour
le plaisir</em> » comme
l’intempérant nous devrions « prendre plaisir <em>à
vivre</em> ». Pour cela, il
faut exercer les activités pour lesquelles nous sommes faits, et qui
rencontrent le moins d’entraves en nous et hors de nous. Cette
réalisation de nos capacités, c’est « l’excellence »
(ou la vertu dans la traduction traditionnelle) qui apparaît donc
comme la condition du bonheur.
</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0cm" align="JUSTIFY">L’homme
vertueux l’est donc parce que c’est la vertu qui assure <em>son</em>
bonheur, et en ce sens il est égoïste, mais cet égoïsme se révèle
à l’analyse aussi bénéfique à moi qu’à autrui : ma
relative indifférence aux autres les met en effet à l’abri de mes
passions hostiles, comme elle les laisse plus libres dans les
rapports d’amitié ou d’amour que je peux entretenir avec eux.
</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0cm" align="JUSTIFY">Dans
la troisième partie <strong>(« Les
moyens d’agir »),</strong>
l’auteur montre que pour réaliser en nous cette excellence, nous
devons travailler sur nos habitudes afin de les rectifier, éduquer
notre sensibilité afin de la rendre plus fine et perfectionner notre
jugement afin de faire, dans chaque occasion particulière, le
meilleur choix possible, tout en acceptant une incertitude
irréductible.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0cm" align="JUSTIFY">Dans
la dernière partie enfin <strong>(« Une
vision du sens de l’existence »),</strong>
l’auteur montre que le juste milieu ou la mesure prônés par
Aristote n’ont rien de tiède ou de médiocre. Après avoir fait
voir en quel sens les vices peuvent être analysés comme des défauts
ou des excès, l’auteur conclut cette partie plus convenue en
montrant que l’idéal de mesure est un idéal de raison qui culmine
dans le modèle de l’homme prudent.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0cm" align="JUSTIFY">L’ouvrage
s’achève sur les <strong>« Éléments
d’une vie </strong>» d’Aristote,
qui constituent aussi un portrait du Philosophe, au style volontiers
amusant – à propos de la minutie du Stagirite, l’auteur note
ainsi qu’il y a « <em>quelque
chose du contrôleur fiscal chez Aristote</em> »
(p. 179) –, et par une brève bibliographie commentée, où
l’auteur revendique au passage ce qu’il doit à l’ouvrage <em>Après
la vertu</em> d’A. MacIntyre.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0cm" align="JUSTIFY">Refusant
par ailleurs toute technicité, toute référence à la littérature
secondaire et presque tout terme grec (toutes choses qui intimident
plus qu’elles n’éclairent dans ce type d’ouvrages), le petit
livre de Damien Clerget-Gurnaud se signale d’abord par son
caractère remarquablement accessible et par une clarté qui n’exclut
ni la précision ni l’élégance.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0cm" align="JUSTIFY"> Une
autre vertu de l’ouvrage est d’établir de bout en bout un
dialogue avec son lecteur, lequel est régulièrement interpellé et
invité à s’approprier les analyses du Stagirite. À cet égard,
les sections intitulées <strong>« Questions
vitales </strong>» et
<strong>« Philo-action </strong>»,
qui concluent chaque section du livre, en constituent une partie très
originale et bienvenue, aussi importante par le volume (une
cinquantaine de pages au total) que par l’efficacité. Ainsi, quand
il veut montrer que le savoir est souvent un instrument du désir et
non son principe, l’auteur propose le test suivant : « <em>Vous
arrive-t-il de percevoir derrière certains de vos arguments un désir
inavoué ? Quels sujets de conversation suscitent en vous une
susceptibilité inhabituelle ?</em> »,
et de noter : « <em>Le
désir contrarié est bien plus facile à débusquer que le désir
que rien n’empêche. Là où réside votre colère gît aussi votre
désir</em>… » (p. 16).
Le même souci d’impliquer son lecteur conduit l’auteur à
choisir ses exemples dans le monde contemporain (les relations
amoureuses, la télévision, le travail salarié…), où les
concepts aristotéliciens se révèlent étonnamment éclairants.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0cm" align="JUSTIFY">S’il
fallait adresser une critique à cet ouvrage elle porterait toutefois
sur l’attribution à Aristote de toutes les analyses que développe
l’auteur. Il arrive en effet que celles-ci s’éloignent à tout
le moins de la lettre du Stagirite, ainsi quand l’auteur fait
l’éloge des désirs et nous invite à les intensifier, dans un des
passages intitulés « Questions vitales », par ailleurs
intéressant, et dont nous citons aussi pour cette raison une
partie : « <em>Que
répondez-vous le plus souvent à la question : “Qu’as-tu
envie de faire ce soir ?” Si vous avez tendance à répondre
la phrase rituelle : “Ce que tu veux !” c’est
peut-être moins par politesse que par manque d’envie. Si cette
attitude est chronique, il est temps de vous interroger :
pourquoi avez-vous si peu de désirs ? Dire “je veux”, pour
beaucoup d’entre nous, relève d’un véritable exploit. C’est
que nous en avons longtemps été découragés</em> »
(p. 16). De même (et c’est peut-être plus gênant), les
citations du corpus aristotélicien demeurent souvent obscures faute
d’une explication un peu linéaire et littérale.
</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0cm" align="JUSTIFY">Mais
c’est qu’il s’agit bien, comme le titre l’indique, non de
nous apprendre quelque chose sur la philosophie d’Aristote, mais
bien de philosopher <em>avec</em>
Aristote, quitte à en infléchir certaines idées ou à en
développer des notations embryonnaires. Et pour ce qui est de
provoquer la réflexion, en particulier au sens d’un retour sur
soi, cet ouvrage, incontestablement, atteint tout à fait son but.</p>
