EN-US">La vivisection au XIXe siècle fut pratiquée avec frénésie :
ainsi, des exercices chirurgicaux furent opérés sur des chevaux vivants, des
bœufs, des mulets, des porcs. Rien ne fut épargné aux animaux - des incisions,
des ponctions, des ligatures, des saignées durant des heures entières - entre
les mains d’élèves destinés à devenir des praticiens. D’autres expériences
d’une rare cruauté consistaient à couper ou arracher les nerfs des
lapins, des chiens…En outre, les cris des animaux, loin de susciter la
compassion des vivisecteurs, donnaient de précieuses informations aux

n’ai pas été employé au XVIIIe siècle ; tout au plus, cette pratique
scientifique fut-elle considérée comme une partie de la dissection, « une
anatomie en mouvement ». C’est au XIXe siècle qu’elle est définie
comme « une expérience faite sur les animaux vivants à l’effet
d’arriver à déterminer les propriétés des tissus et des humeurs ou les usages
des organes ». Puis au XIXe siècle, dans le « Grand dictionnaire du
XIXe siècle », les explications sont plus détaillées : la vivisection
comprend « les mutilations, incisions, excisions, ablations, injections,
sections faites dans le but de pénétrer le mécanisme des fonctions de la
vie. » La vivisection n’est donc pas seulement une méthode mais un
véritable paradigme. En effet, cette pratique médicale regroupe une communauté
de chercheurs ; en ce sens, la vivisection constitue une lutte pour
la domination.</span></p>

faire « l’anatomie d’une polémique ». La vivisection fut en effet un
sujet polémique car elle opposait les partisans de l’utilité à ceux qui dénonçaient
par compassion les souffrances infligées aux animaux. Il faut donc se demander
pourquoi la vivisection a été pratiquée avec une telle intensité au XIXe siècle
et pourquoi elle a été contestée. « Faire l’anatomie d’une
polémique », c’est aussi prendre au sérieux le discours et le combat des
antivivisectionnistes contre la cruauté de la vivisection. D’après l’auteur, la
France a créé le paradigme de la vivisection. C’est à travers des documents de

pamphlets des antivivisectionnistes que l’auteur entend retracer l’histoire
mouvementée et polémique de la vivisection. Pour autant, peut-on affirmer que
le combat contre la vivisection fut un combat contre la science ? Jean-Yves

s’explique principalement par le souci de rationaliser la démarche
expérimentale. C’est pourquoi la vivisection devient la norme de la
physiologie. Il ne faudrait pas pour autant penser que cette pratique médicale
se limite aux seuls « savants » comme Bernard et Magendie. Bien au
contraire, les écoles vétérinaires, les écoles de médecine, la chirurgie font
un usage frénétique de la vivisection. Car la physiologie a pour but de faire
avancer la médecine des animaux et donc celle des hommes. Au nom d’une
idéologie du progrès issue des Lumières, on fait de la science la condition de
toute émancipation. De ce fait, l’Empire encourage les recherches dans le
domaine des sciences physico-chimiques à des fins militaires. Dans les années
1830, la physiologie s’institutionnalise : Magendie obtient une chaire au
Collège de France, Flourens un poste au Museum, Bernard et Lasègue ouvrent un
laboratoire en 1840. Dès lors, le mot d’ordre « instituer une
expérience » constitue un objet de foi sans aucune considération pour
l’animal éventré ou auquel on a passé un clou dans la trachée-artère pour
éviter qu’il ne crie. Certaines pratiques de la vivisection avaient pour
finalité de pénétrer le secret de la vie par la section des fonctions
organiques ; ainsi Magendie coupait les racines nerveuses de la moelle
épinière à des chiots pour distinguer les racines motrices des racines
sensitives !</span></p>

vivisecteurs - « matière, donc matière à expérimentation » (P37). Les
vivisecteurs partageaient les mêmes croyances selon lesquelles un être vivant
n’avait pas de spécificité propre, d’où le rejet de toute croyance relative au
vitalisme au profit du matérialisme. Cette confiance en la science s’affirmait
dans la foi en l’expérimentation. A cet égard, la science selon Bernard est une
croyance : l’expérimentation sur le vivant garantit une base scientifique
à la médecine. Fort de sa notoriété, Bernard, dans <em>L’introduction à l’étude
de la méthode expérimentale, </em>exige le « droit d’une manière
entière et absolue » de faire des vivisections sur les animaux. Il est
évident selon le physiologiste que les « cris de sensibilité » de
« gens du monde » ne sont rien au regard des exigences de la
science :</span></p>

1820-1840 à l’Académie de médecine quant à la valeur scientifique des
expérimentations. La contestation menée principalement par l’académicien et
professeur Gerdy portait sur l’incertitude et la contradiction des résultats
(notamment l’analogie biologique entre l’homme et l’animal). Avec raison,
Gerdy s’interroge sur l’exigence de vérité des vivisecteurs : la foi
des scientifiques ne serait-elle pas l’alibi de leur désir de gloire et de
reconnaissance ? Sans entrer dans le détail de ces contestations, on peut
remarquer que la pratique de la vivisection apportait une grande renommée aux
savants :</span></p>

travail d’un corps professionnel, sert aux vivisecteurs et à eux seulement, à

illimités » sur les animaux et s’inquiète des conséquences sur la jeunesse
de ce spectacle de la cruauté.</span></p>

mso-ansi-language:EN-US">Force est de constater que les antivivisectionnistes
au XIXe siècle regroupent des féministes, des progressistes et de grands
défenseurs des causes humaines et animales – Victor Hugo et Victor Schoelcher.
Le combat des antivivisectionnistes est politique : c’est en ce sens un
mouvement progressiste et animé d’un souci de justice sociale. La lutte contre
la vivisection s’accompagne chez les féministes anglaises de la critique de
l’autorité masculine, notamment dans le domaine médical. En effet, les
vivisecteurs sont en majorité des hommes fiers de leur pouvoir. Or, les féministes
entendent faire de leur combat contre la vivisection une lutte pour la
justice et l’égalité. C’est ainsi que Kingsford bouleverse les mœurs de son
temps par ses études de médecine et son refus de faire de la vivisection un
art ! Ces femmes, loin des conventions sociales admises, se montrent
déterminées et inventives dans leurs actions et leurs prises de position :
Marie Huot n’hésite pas à perturber au Collège de France en 1883 une
démonstration sur un petit singe de Brown- Séquard (successeur de Claude
Bernard). La Ligue antivivisectionniste à laquelle adhère Huot entretient des
rapports très étroits avec les anarchistes comme Louise Michel et les
féministes révolutionnaires, les socialistes. En effet, la lutte contre la
vivisection est une lutte contre l’esclavage, qu’elle résulte de l’exploitation
des prolétaires ou des animaux ! C’est pourquoi la Ligue
antivivisectionniste est abolitionniste puisqu’elle s’oppose à l’existence de
la vivisection comme de toute forme d’esclavage. D’autre part, des liens
étroits existent entre la lutte contre la vivisection et la société de
théosophie : Anna Kingsford entretient des relations étroites avec Helena
Petrovna Blavatsky. La société de théosophie est une organisation
internationale ayant pour but de défendre la fraternité universelle. La vision
philosophique de la théosophie est donc compatible avec le respect de la
nature, de la vie animale. C’est pourquoi la lutte contre la vivisection
participe d’un respect pour les êtres. Mais il faut bien remarquer une opposition
fondamentale entre une science utilitariste et une philosophie
spiritualiste : c’est ainsi qu’Anna Kingsford refuse la séparation de
l’homme avec d’autres espèces au nom d’un principe philosophique. La ligue
antivivisectionniste s’impose par son radicalisme et ses militants n’hésitent
pas à s’infiltrer dans les laboratoires, dans les conférences afin de perturber
les cours des médecins. Il semble nécessaire de gagner le public à sa
cause ; car les scientifiques ont tendance à nier la souffrance animale
lors des expérimentations. D’ailleurs les vivisecteurs donnent une image
caricaturale des défenseurs de la cause animale : les militants sont
souvent considérés comme des hystériques ou des êtres dotés d’une sensibilité
exacerbée. Les vivisecteurs justifient le sacrifice
de quelques animaux pour le bien-être de tous alors que les
antivivisectionnistes mettent en avant l’inutilité de cet
« art ».</span></p>

inconciliables. Le propos général du livre consiste donc à réfléchir sur les
méthodes de la connaissance en sciences sociales, plus précisément « sur
le rapport à la connaissance qu’implique l’éthique du care » (p.10).</span></p>

à entrer en résistance contre la sociologie dominante qu’elle définit comme
« patriarcale » afin d’élaborer une sociologie d’inspiration
féministe à même de pouvoir décrire l’éthique du care.</span></p>

conception classique de la morale incarnée notamment par son acception
kantienne ne laisse aucun moyen pour rendre compte de la dimension morale du <em>care</em>.
Il faut donc sortir du cadre classique pour montrer l’existence de points de
vue moraux « ordinaires », c’est-à-dire « 1) au sens où ils
émergent de la vie de tous les jours ; 2) au sens où ils ne sont pas
inclus dans les conceptions majoritaires – autorisées, dominantes – de la
morale » (p.13).</span></p>

morales de Gilligan qui critique la théorie de Kohlberg. D’après cette théorie
qui se fonde sur une conception kantienne de la moralité, les filles sont
jugées déficientes par rapport aux garçons. Pour pouvoir rendre compte de la
dimension morale des femmes, et plus généralement de l’éthique du <em>care</em>,
il faudrait donc sortir de l’éthique de la justice et définir la moralité dans
une autre perspective. Car autant les concepts généraux et abstraits de droits,
d’obligations et de règles organisent la perspective de la justice, autant
l’éthique du <em>care</em> se fonde sur le concept particulier et concret de
responsabilité. Or, les acteurs du <em>care</em>, pour exprimer la dimension
morale de leurs activités, vont utiliser un vocabulaire affectif lié à des
expériences toujours particulières. Nous sommes donc face à une difficulté
d’après Paperman : comment faire de la sensibilité un outil de
connaissance et de compréhension morale alors qu’elle risque toujours d’être
jugée « immature ou peu aboutie » (p.18) ?</span></p>

analyse sur la difficulté de la part de la sociologie à reconnaître la
légitimité des émotions et des sentiments dans la construction du monde social.
Ce qui amène du même coup à rejeter certains acteurs dans l’analyse du monde
social : les femmes, les enfants, les pauvres, les handicapés au nom de
leur prétendue nature émotionnelle. Après avoir expliqué les causes de cette
disqualification en se fondant sur la distinction classique (Durkheim, Mauss)
entre sentiments collectifs et individuels, Paperman cherche a contrario à
réhabiliter la sensibilité individuelle et privée en montrant qu’elle est
socialement constituée et de ce fait socialement intelligible. Mais alors
comment analyser sociologiquement cette vie intérieure, essentielle en ce qui
concerne l’étude du care ?</span></p>

schèmes dominants de la pensée sociologique et philosophique qui reposent sur
des dichotomies telles que sentiment/raison, subjectif/objectif, passif/actif,
individuel/collectif, féminin/masculin... afin de « remettre les
sentiments à leur place : dans le registre de l’activité pratique »
(p.35). Paperman en vient à définir en trois points la particularité de
l’analyse novatrice des sentiments qu’elle propose : 1) ne pas analyser
les sentiments de manière générale mais seulement ceux qui donnent une
dimension morale aux relations (amour, attention, compassion, respect,
souci...) ; 2) ne pas considérer les sentiments comme des motifs
irrationnels d’une action rationnelle mais comme un élément qui permet
d’éclairer des choix face à des situations particulières ; 3) considérer
les sentiments comme expressions de points de vue moraux
« ordinaires » (cf. plus haut) les rendant ainsi sensés et compréhensibles.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:12.0pt;text-align:justify;text-justify:

mso-ansi-language:EN-US">Il découle de cette nouvelle analyse une autre
conception de la morale et de la justice pour laquelle l’impartialité n’est
plus un impératif : « Ce sont plutôt les engagements pratiques envers
des personnes particulières qui en composent le socle. » (p.37) Ce
faisant, Paperman s’inscrit d’après elle dans une perspective féministe qui
consiste à une réévaluation du domaine des relations informelles pour concevoir
la morale : non seulement le sentiment et la relation particulière entre
deux personnes qui étaient écartés par la tradition kantienne de la définition
de la moralité sont réhabilités, mais du même coup les femmes sortent de leur
soit-disant incapacité morale due à leur place et à leur affaire considérées
comme privées. Ainsi la perspective du care intègre cette dimension épistémique
et morale des émotions.</span></p>

mso-ansi-language:EN-US">3. Dans une dernière partie, Paperman tire partie de
son analyse pour nourrir sa réflexion sur la connaissance du care, sujet
principal de sa recherche. A partir d’une analyse des raisons de l’intérêt
qu’on a commencé à porter au care dans les années 1980, puis en s’appuyant à
nouveau sur l’importance de l’étude de l’engagement dans le care, Paperman
cherche à définir une connaissance qui pourrait produire « une
objectivation de l’organisation sociale du care » (p.51). Pour cela,
« une position de surplomb » par rapport aux relations personnelles
composant le monde social est à proscrire. Au contraire, le sociologue doit se
plonger dans ces relations pour comprendre ce qu’elles produisent comme formes
de vie humaine.</span></p>

rejeté tout rapprochement avec la proposition de la sociologie pragmatique
développée par Boltanski et Thévenot, Paperman insiste sur la nécessité de
l’abandon d’une posture monologique de l’observateur qui pourrait accéder à la
vérité du phénomène. Au contraire, il s’agirait de mettre à jour la réalité
complexe et parfois conflictuelle des relations des sujets en proposant une
méthode d’analyse (ou d’enquête) collaborative ou dialogique.</span></p>

le <em>care</em> aux sciences sociales est d’abord épistémologique. » (p.54)
Il s’agit, en effet de concevoir le travail de recherche de façon radicale-ment
différente « de ce que préconise la conception <em>mainstream</em> de la
connaissance qui prévaut en sociologie » (p.57) en s’inspirant de
l’épistémologie du point de vue : « une manière de produire des
connaissances qui intègrent des protagonistes qui en seraient normalement
absents, qui élargit son public, lui rend des comptes et revendique son
caractère politique. » (p.58)</span></p>

prioritairement adressé aux sociologues soucieux de comprendre la spécificité
du care, en indiquant les pistes épistémologiques d’une méthodologie particulière
s’inspirant des courants féministes.</span></p>

la définition de la morale kantienne n’est pas sans intérêt, notamment
lorsqu’elle développe le modèle de développement moral proposé par Kohlberg.
L’exemple qu’elle tire d’<em>Une voix différente</em> de Gilligan s’intitulant
« le dilemme de Heinz » (Heinz n’a pas d’argent, sa femme est malade,
Heinz devrait-il voler le médicament au pharmacien qui refuse de le lui

dont G. Guilpain nous entretient nous le montrent : ces choix ne sont pas
anodins en ce sens qu’à chaque fois, ils signifient quelque chose aux autres
femmes, aux hommes et à la société qui les entourent mais également à ceux qui,
comme nous, n’ont pas vécu aux mêmes époques que les leurs. </span></p>

bannies par une certaine<em> doxa</em>, les femmes célibataires d’aujourd’hui
sont célébrées par quelques journaux féminins qui évoquent les célibattantes en
enfermant celles-ci dans une situation unique, une sous-case de la catégorie
« femmes actives » elle-même mise en œuvre par nos sociologues

est-il réellement ? Ce statut est-il si enviable et si homogène qu’il y
paraît ? Qu’est ce qui se dissimule derrière cette vie en solo et qu’est
ce qui a pu inciter telle ou telle à faire ce choix de vie ? Le travail de
G. Guilpain nous montre à quel point les motivations personnelles de chacune
sont singulières et qu’il n’est pas un célibat mais plusieurs types de
célibataires. Pour nous le montrer et nous aider à comprendre à quel point le
divers est la norme en l’occurrence, celui-ci propose de faire retour en
arrière afin de rencontrer des femmes qui ont choisi (ou subi) le célibat en
France entre le XVIIème et le XXIème siècle. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;text-justify:inter-ideograph;
mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none"><span style="font-family:"Lucida Sans";mso-bidi-font-family:Times" lang="FR">Pour y
parvenir, le texte - qui se refuse à juste titre à se prévaloir de la qualité
d’étude historique ( ce qui est on ne peut plus juste pour un texte qui cherche
avant tout à creuser la singularité de chacune des situations étudiées) - est
divisé en quatre parties. Chacune d’elles présente des parcours singuliers en
des moments donnés à partir desquels, une forme d’<em>épistémé</em> du célibat
féminin s’esquisse malgré tout entre les lignes.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;text-justify:inter-ideograph;
mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none"><span style="font-family:"Lucida Sans";mso-bidi-font-family:Times" lang="FR">Le premier
moment de l’ouvrage débute ainsi au XVIIème siècle. Il évoque le cas de celles
que G. Guilpain appelle les pionnières d’un célibat laïc qui fait son apparition,
notamment Marie de Gournay et de Gabrielle Suchon. Pour la première, le célibat
fut un obstacle car il la priva d’un soutien familial mais il constitua
également un aiguillon personnel qui lui permit de se contraindre à chercher
une certaine reconnaissance sociale qui devait l’aider à se dépasser
culturellement et personnellement nous précise l’auteure (p.41). G. Souchon,
quant à elle, rejette le couvent et le mariage qu’elle met dos à dos afin de
rechercher une situation tierce qui correspondrait plus volontiers à ses goûts
et inclinations. Pour elle, le célibat est la marque d’une vie sans engagement
(p.53). Il signifie déjà une forme d’affranchissement social et une liberté
intellectuelle et morale.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;text-justify:inter-ideograph;
mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none"><span style="font-family:"Lucida Sans";mso-bidi-font-family:Times" lang="FR">La
deuxième partie de l’ouvrage avance dans le temps pour aborder la période
moderne et le XIXème siècle. En ce siècle qui encense la famille, G. Guilpain
nous rappelle que le célibat est mal perçu. L’injonction à l’enfantement et à
la maternité devient plus pressante qu’autrefois. La France se pense désormais
comme une nation qui doit fabriquer de futurs soldats pour la défendre, la
faire vivre et la nourrir. Face à cette pression sociale assez forte, quelques
femmes résistent et leur idéal est porté notamment par le socialisme saint
simonien qui émerge (p 65) ainsi que par un souci de dire autre chose que ce
que qu’expriment les intellectuels au masculin.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;text-justify:inter-ideograph;
mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none"><span style="font-family:"Lucida Sans";mso-bidi-font-family:Times" lang="FR">Ces femmes
veulent donc s’exprimer. Elles souhaitent également se libérer d’une emprise
masculine dont elles pressentent peut-être qu’il mènera à la catastrophe. Elles
entendent se libérer d’un mariage qu’il soit imposé ou non et qui confond le <em>padre</em>
et le <em>padrone</em>. Comme l’indique G. Guilpain, l’une de ces militantes,
Jeanne Deroin écrit ainsi, dans son Traité du célibat, les mots suivants :</span></p>

mots : le mari doit protection à sa femme, celle-ci doit <strong>obéissance à
son mari</strong>…Je ne reconnaîtrai jamais le droit du plus fort, jamais je ne
donnerai mon adhésion à des principes que <strong>ma conscience réprouve</strong>. (cité
p. 71)</span></p>

est donc l’expression d’une conscience qui se révolte contre l’inique et Jeanne
Deroin est l’une des singulières représentantes de ce célibat combatif moderne
qui refuse de voir dans le mariage un contrat dans lequel l’un est considéré comme
la propriété inaliénable de l’autre. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;text-justify:inter-ideograph;
mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none"><span style="font-family:"Lucida Sans";mso-bidi-font-family:Times" lang="FR">Derrière
ce combat, ces jeunes femmes souhaitent également lutter contre ceux qui
refusent que le mariage se réalise selon de libres inclinations et qui sont
adeptes des unions arrangées (p.75). Certaines, comme Flora Tristan vivent le
célibat comme un moyen, non seulement de se libérer des contraintes maternelles
et conjugales mais aussi de se retrouver et de se construire dans une
nécessaire solitude. D’autres comme Sophie Ulliac le jugent indispensable pour
mener à bien une carrière littéraire et/ou artistique qu’elles estiment
fondamentale pour la construction et la garde de leur être. Au début du XXème
siècle, Claire Pic rejette également le mariage car, écrit-elle, 19 fois sur 20
celui-ci se solde par un échec. Claire Pozzi, quant à elle, fuit le mariage
qu’elle considère n’être pour la femme qu’un lent processus de désappropriation
de soi au profit du désir de l’autre. (p. 111). Le célibat moderne est donc
ouvertement politique, social et libéral au sens noble de ces termes. </span></p>

troisième partie de l’ouvrage poursuit l’étude historique pour nous plonger
dans le XXème siècle et revenir sur le XIXème siècle finissant. La modernité
s’est affirmée avec plus de force. Les choses ont désormais changé. Le célibat
n’est plus seulement le fait de pionnières. En effet, comme le rapporte
judicieusement G. Guilpain :</span></p>

assistantes sociales, doctoresses, ces nouvelles indépendantes inquiètent,
interrogent parfois fascinent, héroïnes admirées ou honnies d’une joute
littéraire qui oppose féministes et antiféministes. L’apologie de la maternité
et de la famille…ne suffit plus à enrayer l’expansion du célibat ( p. 115).</span></p>
</blockquote><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;text-justify:inter-ideograph;
mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none"><span style="font-family:"Lucida Sans";mso-bidi-font-family:Times" lang="FR">Le célibat
s’étend mais cette extension gêne encore tous les ennemis de la liberté vécue
comme expression et vie de soi dans une singularité éprouvée. En conséquence,
une figure de la honte et de tous les dangers émerge et est favorisée par le
camp des grincheux. Celle-ci est incarnée par Monique Lherbier dans le roman de
V. Margueritte, <em>La garçonne.</em> L’histoire du roman est celle d’une jeune
femme qui se lance dans la débauche mais qui finit par retrouver le droit
chemin après une existence que l’auteur dépeint comme malséante pour décourager
sans doute les candidates au célibat. (p 117). Il faut édifier les jeunes
filles qui voudraient s’égarer du droit chemin.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;text-justify:inter-ideograph;
mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none"><span style="font-family:"Lucida Sans";mso-bidi-font-family:Times" lang="FR">Toutefois,
malgré cette pression une forme de célibat se développe peu à peu. Il n’obéit
cependant pas toujours aux mêmes contraintes. D’un côté en effet, Geneviève
Gulipain nous rappelle que cette époque de la massification devient celle d’un
célibat populaire et souvent imposé, celui des domestiques et de ces
jeunes filles que l’on destine à l’enseignement primaire. G. Guilpain nous
rappelle ainsi que ces jeunes femmes :</span></p>

l’institution qui leur dicte le célibat. (p. 129)</span></code></p>

mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none"><span style="font-family:"Lucida Sans";mso-bidi-font-family:Times" lang="FR">Que
dira-t-on de mademoiselle si elle reçoit un homme chez elle ? Sera-t-elle
suffisamment disponible si elle prend époux ? Ce célibat ne peut se
confondre avec celui des deux Simone ( de Beauvoir et Weil) que G. Guilpain a
la judicieuse idée d’étudier conjointement sous un chapitre qu’elle intitule
« philosophes subversives ». Ce choix singulier de vie de femme pour
l’une et l’autre sera marqué par une « boulimie de savoir » (p. 145)
et il influencera fortement les générations suivantes.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;text-justify:inter-ideograph;
mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none"><span style="font-family:"Lucida Sans";mso-bidi-font-family:Times" lang="FR">Ces deux
intellectuelles nous conduiront ainsi tout naturellement vers une quatrième
partie dans laquelle G. Guilpain interroge <em>in fine</em> le sort des femmes
célibataires en ce 21<sup>ème</sup> siècle qui débute. Mai 68 est passé par là,
la France a terriblement changée en termes de législation et de mœurs :
l’union libre et les divorces deviennent une forme de norme dans certains
milieux « bobos ». Le célibat regroupe désormais des situations
diverses : de la femme divorcée, à la jeune femme soucieuse de vivre
librement après de longues études avant de se mettre en couple, en passant par
celle qui a choisi de vivre une vie sexuelle « différente », la veuve
ou la personne pauvre et isolée. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;text-justify:inter-ideograph;
mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none"><span style="font-family:"Lucida Sans";mso-bidi-font-family:Times" lang="FR">Cette
multiplicité de situations n’exclut pas les poncifs qui font leur retour sous
d’autres formes et G.Guilpain note ainsi :</span></p>

de la vieille fille nourrissaient une prose littérairement rentable ; de
même le thème de la célibataire sympathique et active maniant humour et
autodérision afin de cacher son désarroi connaît un franc succès. (p. 178)</span></p>
</blockquote><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;text-justify:inter-ideograph;
mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none"><span style="font-family:"Lucida Sans";mso-bidi-font-family:Times" lang="FR"> Un salon des célibataires est désormais créé
et son but est d’aider celles qui sont présentées comme souffrantes d’une telle
situation. Dans un tel climat qui clame la détresse de la célibataire (qui
n’est ainsi pas toujours la « célibattante » que l’on nous
présentait), G. Guilpain note qu’il n’est pas étonnant que les célibataires se
fassent discrètes malgré les déclarations tonitruantes de quelques journaux
féminins évoqués plus haut. Elle nous rappelle que ces dernières, afin d’exister,
prennent des détours, des voies indirectes, celle de la fiction, de l’éloge de
la solitude, de l’amitié et nous l’avons vu, de la revendication d’un statut
qui n’est pas aussi bien dessiné qu’il n’y paraît et qui dissimule de multiples
et singulières trajectoires de vie. La dimension politique de la démarche
(lorsqu’elle existe) est désormais gommée et seule une caricature
pseudo-sociologique gouverne les esprits en enfermant les individues dans une
ignorance de ce qu’elles sont et de ce qu’elles vivent réellement. Etablissant
un tel constat, G. Guilpain s’interroge alors et à juste titre sur cette quasi
censure qui n’existait pas dans les époques précédentes et pense judicieusement
qu’une</span></p>
<blockquote><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left:70.8pt;text-align:justify;text-justify:

symbolique par la réduction au silence est le durcissement manifeste de la
normalisation sociale contemporaine. (p.188).</span></p>

remarque est forte mais malheureusement juste à nos yeux. En conséquence,
l’auteure regrette que le célibat féminin, pourtant lourd de sens sociologique,
politique et philosophique ne soit plus interrogé que sous une dimension privée
et existentielle. Son dernier chapitre se présente donc comme un appel à la
reconquête du célibat. Elle entend rappeler que celui-ci est avant tout
affirmation d’un droit à se nommer, à exister, à vivre par soi-même (p.194) et
qu’il y a en lui une dimension éthique nouvelle sur laquelle elle souhaite que
nous revenions. Cette éthique nouvelle, écrit-elle</span></p>

assignations au sexe (la constituerait. Toutefois, avant qu’il advienne et)… en
attendant la persévérance dans le célibat répond à une volonté de commencer à
partir de soi cette métamorphose, d’opter pour une certaine façon de vivre sa
liberté, de développer une culture distincte… (p. 220)</span></p>

de ces lignes ne peut que souscrire à un tel appel. Il y a de tous temps eu des
hommes ou des groupes sociaux qui ont totalement ignoré la soif de liberté de
certaines femmes que l’on cherchait par tout moyen à réduire au silence. Pour
fuir ces individus et ces groupes qui niaient la part - non d’exceptionnalité
précise G. Guilpain mais - de singularité (donc d‘humanité) de ces êtres que
l’on pouvait tuer ainsi à petit feu, il importe effectivement de laisser à
celle et à celui qui veut vivre dans le célibat le droit de le vivre en toute
quiétude sans souci du qu’en-dira-t-on et en exprimant par lui-même les
singulières raisons d’un choix qui peut parfois nous aider à réfléchir sur ce
que nous sommes et faisons des relations hommes/femmes. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;text-justify:inter-ideograph;
mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none"><span style="font-family:"Lucida Sans";mso-bidi-font-family:Times" lang="FR">Il importe
également de sortir des clichés sous-sociologiques qui tuent peu à peu la
pensée et l’analyse dans ce pays et qui interdisent ainsi à nos concitoyens
d’exprimer ce qu’ils sont et ce qu’ils entendent dire à la société afin que
celle-ci s’ouvre un peu plus aux différences et cesse de nous faire croire en
une prétendue ouverture qui n’est que le masque de cette normalisation
galopante qui la caractérise de plus en plus comme G. Guilpain a raison de le
noter. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;text-justify:inter-ideograph;

participe à sa manière à ce travail d’ouverture en aidant ces êtres qui ont
opté pour le singulier en tous les sens du terme à vivre comme ils ou elles
l’entendent en leur redonnant une voix. Liberté, liberté chérie…Telles sont les
paroles oubliées d’un hymne national dont on ne retient le plus souvent que les
premières paroles presque sanguinaires… </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;text-justify:inter-ideograph;

d’autres voix s’élèvent dans notre pays pour permettre à chacun de vivre, non
dans la licence, mais dans cette liberté que les ennemis de celle-ci, par
pathologie grave, intérêt ou violence (acquise ou innée) souhaitent
définitivement faire taire et étouffer.</span></p>

<p style="margin-bottom: 0cm; " align="JUSTIFY">L'ouvrage se présente comme une réflexion sur les transformations qu'ont subi l'âge et le sexe dans la modernité avancée. L'auteur ne conclut pas à la fin de ces repères, mais à leur individualisation dans le cadre d'une identité narrative. Il s'intéresse en particulier au devenir adulte des sujets. Ainsi, les transformations relatives à la place des femmes ont contribué à modifier en profondeur la notion même d'adulte.</p> Dans l'avant-propos,
Pierre-Henri Tavoillot, enseignant à la Sorbonne et Président du
collège international de philosophie, dont l'un des précédents
ouvrage était une <em>Philosophie des âges de la vie</em>, présente
la problématique générale de son ouvrage. Il part d'un constat:
celui de l'importance dans l'organisation des sociétés
traditionnelles de ces deux marqueurs sociaux que constituaient l'âge
et le sexe. Il souligne le contraste apparent avec les sociétés
contemporaines qui semblent connaître un brouillage de ces
catégories. Néanmoins, cela ne signifie pas pour lui qu'elles aient
perdu leur sens. Pour analyser cela, il va centrer sa réflexion sur
une question: <em>Qu'est-ce qu'un adulte ?</em> L'introduction reprend
le constat du brouillage des catégories de sexe et d'âge en
l'illustrant à partir de plusieurs exemples pris dans la famille,
l'entreprise ou la Cité.
<p style="margin-bottom: 0cm" align="JUSTIFY"> Dans le premier
chapitre, le brouillage des âges, l'auteur oppose deux scénarios:
d'une part, celui d'une disparition des âges et de l'autre celui de
la lutte des âges. Le second chapitre s'intéresse à une troisième
hypothèse: celle d'une crise de l'âge adulte. Il ne s'agit pas
cependant pour l'auteur d'une disparition de l'âge adulte, mais
d'une reconfiguration de celui-ci lié à un bouleversement général
des âges de la vie. Il l'examine à travers trois dimensions.
L'apparition de nouveaux âges: l'adulte se trouve pris entre
l'adolescent et le retraité. L'impératif d'innover désigne ce que
l'on qualifie habituellement de tendance au « jeunisme »
de nos sociétés. La dernière dimension est étudiée dans le
troisième chapitre de l'ouvrage: il s'agit de la reconfiguration des
rapports de sexe. Sur ce point, la thèse de l'auteur n'est pas celle
d'une disparition des identités de genre contre les positions des
théoriciennes du <em>queer</em>. Elle n'est pas non plus celle de
luttes de reconnaissance d'une identité féminine différente. Pour
l'auteur, cette transformation des rôles sociaux de genre tient au
fait que « les femmes sont devenues des adultes ». Il
rappelle que la République s'est constituée en considérant que
l'adulte était un homme, au sens de membre du genre masculin, tandis
que la femme était considérée comme mineure. L'obtention de
l'égalité des droits civiques et civils pour les femmes marque leur
accès au statut d'adulte. Mais de fait, elles contribuent à en
modifier l'identité en y intégrant la dimension du <em>care

<p style="margin-bottom: 0cm" align="JUSTIFY"> Une fois ces éléments
posés, le quatrième chapitre porte sur une question d'éthique:
comment peut-on conduire sa vie dans un tel contexte social ?
L'auteur rappelle la manière dont les sociétés avaient
traditionnellement répondu à la question de la bonne vie. Les
sociétés traditionnelles avaient privilégiés la sécurité d'une
communauté sociale qui organisait les rites de passage. Une seconde
réponse qui a été celle du christianisme était d'affirmer qu'il
ne s'agissait pas seulement de devenir adulte socialement, mais
également spirituellement. Une troisième voie a consisté à
rechercher l'harmonie entre l'individu et le cosmos. Une dernière
réponse plus récente a confié à l'Etat le soin d'organiser les
stades de l'existence. Dans le cinquième chapitre, l'auteur ne se
range pas au constat d'une disparition des âges de la vie, même
s'ils ne sont plus organisés par des institutions. Pour lui, ces
stades de l'existence sont devenus des processus qui s'organisent
dans le cadre d'une identité narrative, d'un récit autobiographique
du sujet sur lui-même. Le processus par lequel nous devenons
adultes, l'auteur propose de l'appeler la <em>maturescence. </em>Il
distingue enfin dans le dernier chapitre de l'ouvrage trois exigences
de l'être adulte aujourd'hui, à savoir: l'expérience, la
responsabilité et l'authenticité. En conclusion, si l'on comprend
que le devenir de l'enfant, c'est d'être adulte, celui du
vieillissement est d'élargir les trois dimensions mises en place par
l'âge adulte. L'ouvrage est ensuite suivi d'une discussion qui
aborde différentes thématiques telles que la parité, la place des
grands-parents, l'individu, l'adolescence, la vieillesse...</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0cm" align="JUSTIFY">La réflexion de
l'auteur s'inscrit dans un positionnement philosophique qui est celui
d'une philosophie du sujet et de l'autonomie de l'individu dont la
norme est l'adulte. Ainsi, ses positions en matière de féminisme
peuvent être rattaché au courant libéral égalitaire: il existe
non pas deux sexes, mais une humanité dont les individus sont libres
et égaux en droit. Il prend ici position contre deux autres types
d'analyse. Tout d'abord, celle des courants post-structuralistes,
comme les théories <em>queer</em>, qui dans la lignée de Michel
Foucault analysant <em>Qu'est-ce que les Lumières</em> de Kant ou de
Gilles Deleuze parlant d'un devenir monoritaire enfant ou femme
contre l'étalon majoritaire de l'homme blanc adulte, ont déconstruit
les identités normatives dominantes. L'autre analyse à laquelle
s'oppose l'auteur est celle matérialiste des rapports sociaux de
sexe ou de génération qui considèrent que la société est divisée
par des luttes de classes sociales<sup><a class="sdfootnoteanc" name="sdfootnote1anc" href="http://blog.ac-versailles.fr/oeildeminerve/index.php/post/02/01/2013/Pierre-Henri-Tavoillot%2C-Les-femmes-sont-des-adultes-comme-les-autres%2C-La-Tour-d-Aigues%2C-Editions-L-aube%2C-2011-%28lu-par#sdfootnote1sym"><sup>1</sup></a></sup>.
Ces deux courants se revendiquent de l'héritage de Mai 68 que
certains avait interprété comme lié à un conflit de génération
et dans le sillage duquel est né le féminisme de la deuxième
vague.

<p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;" align="JUSTIFY"> Ainsi l'analyse que
l'auteur fournit des brouillages des catégories d'âge et de sexe
s'inscrit dans le cadre d'une philosophie de l'herméneutique du
sujet issue de Paul Ricoeur et dans le sillage des analyses qui de
Louis Dumont à François de Singly ou Jean-Claude Kaufmann insistent
sur le processus d'individuation qui caractériseraient nos sociétés
modernes. </p>
