Na's review

The Missing Picture presents the context of the Khmer Rouge domination over Cambodia between 1975 and 1979. Rithy Panh shows the atrocities commited by the Khmer Rouge when they took control over Cambodia.

For me, the movie itself is interesting. Yet, I was bored. I saw nothing else than inanimate clay figurines and poor quality black and white footage.

In fact, what Rithy Panh gives isn't an image or the quest of a single image, but the image of a quest: the one that is shown through cinema. Rithy Panh said himself "Certain images have to be lacking always, always to be replaced by other.". However, I found it hard to understand.

Rithy Panh wants to show that people cannot forget such an event.

Ro's review

The Missing Picture is a movie made by Rithy Panh who is the narrator as well. Rithy Panh is Cambodian and talks about the genocide by the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. The term "genocide" is questionable because people died of sickness or of starvation and besides the executioners (Khmer Rouge) were Cambodian too so they talked the same language and belonged to the same ethnic group. The narrator recounts this tragedy with his own memories and he uses clay figurines to show the degradation of Cambodians over time, through labor and starvation. In the movie, Rithy Panh talks about a missing picture. I think this missing picture is his childhood that he doesn't remember because of the Red Khmer. It can also refers to the movie itself because it recreates the events to give evidence. I liked this movie because of its original dramatization with clay figurines. Besides, Rithy Panh insists on the human consequences instead of talking about the political aspects of this period.
